Manchester United and England legend talks up the power of the ‘fantastic’ Celtic support
Celtic against Manchester United is an iconic fixture in the minds of many despite the two clubs only playing each other four times comPetitively in their long histories.
When I think of the Old Trafford side facing off against the Bhoys, it’s impossible not to instantly envision Shunsuke Nakamura’s glorious free-kick at Celtic Park or Artur Boruc’s dramatic late penalty save.
However, I also think back to a foggy night in 1995 that honoured Paul McStay for his testimonial during a period of regular friendly meetings between the two clubs. As a young supporter that felt like a big night in its own right that excited fans.
It will be charity that benefits when the two clubs come together again later this year. A team of Celtic legends will take on their United counterparts at Old Trafford on Sunday, September 7th with funds raised going into the English club’s Foundation wing.
One United icon, Bryan Robson, is relishing the opportunity to manage his Red Devils’ side against the Bhoys. Like me, he also fondly remembers those friendly matches from the 1990s, including at his own testimonial after more than 450 appearances for his beloved club.
Bryan Robson on facing Celtic in September
He said [ManUtd.com]: “It adds an extra element of excitement for this Game. The two clubs have a close shared History, having been the first Scottish and English teams to win the European Cup in 1967 and 1968 respectively, and we’ve also seen some big names represent both sides such as Paddy Crerand, Lou Macari and Roy Keane, which gives the clubs a bit of a History and shared respect between us.
“I certainly felt that at my testimonial game back in 1990, when 22,000 Celtic fans came down to Old Trafford. It made for a fantastic night, and a great atmosphere, though I’m not going to tell you what the score was! Quite a few of the other boys [Brian McClair, Ryan Giggs and Roy Keane] also had their testimonial matches against Celtic, and I think they liked how there was a rivalry, but a good friendship and sportsmanship between the two clubs. Their fans always travel in numbers.
“There will be plenty of green and white in Manchester on that day and I’m sure they will make a corner of town an honorary part of Glasgow for the day! Just like our fans, they are so passionate about their club and I’m looking forward to seeing both sets of supporters mingle, chatting Football and enjoying a good Game.”
Celtic fans will play their part for charity again
Utilising nostalgia has been a great way to raise money for good causes in recent years. These legend matches are becoming a regular fixture on the footballing calendar and are often well-attended.
Just last month a Celtic Legends side took on Borussia Dortmund at Celtic Park. That raised over £200,000 in net proceeds after more than 30,000 supporters turned out for the occasion.
Hopefully, there’s similar enthusiasm this September down in Manchester and the famous names of both clubs can do their bit with fans to help out communities in need.
