New Information: These HV Big Lots Are Now Staying Open
In an exciting turn of events, it has been confirmed that two Hudson Valley Big Lots store locations that were scheduled to shutter before year's end are now staying open.
It's true, we are staying open! This is the response I recently received when I called the Wappingers Falls location to confirm the rumors that have been circulating the Hudson Valley the past few days.
Big Lots Announces Store Closures
Full disclosure, I was pretty bummed that one of my favorite spots to shop, especially for holiday and seasonal decor, announced that they were closing a number of the local stores this year. Big Lots has been my go-to spot for years, and after they closed the Poughkeepsie location (conveniently on my way home from the radio station), I said at least we have Wappingers....until the announcement of that store's impending closure came through.
In 2023, Big Lots closed 52 store locations across the states, earlier this year, the news came that 35 to 40 additional locations would be shuttering. The reason behind the closures, 'elevated iNFLation;' this according to the SEC filing where Big Lots indicated that buying power has been highly impacted by iNFLation.
Included in those closures, several Hudson Valley locations.

Big Lots Stores Confirm Rumor: We're Staying Open
The social media rumor mill began buzzing this week with excitement after hearing that certain Big Lots locations would be staying open. Some of the 'mom groups' on Facebook saw a spike in chatter about the Big Lots in Kingston, after hearing that the store would no longer be closing. This prompted follow up questions 'what about Wappingers, are they staying open too?'
Well, calls to both stores, Wappingers Falls and Kingston, have confirmed that these are in fact NOT rumors, both of these stores are no longer closing, and will stay open 'for now.' It appears that the 'store closing' signs have come down, product price reductions are no more, and Hudson Valley shoppers are now able to enter the holiday season with Big Lots Wappingers and Kingston.
Unfortunately, in Orange County, outreach to the Middletown location did not result in the same information. Customer representatives from the Middletown Big Lots store did indicate that they will move forward with their closing plan. The Newburgh store, though, in their new Mid Valley Mall location, will continue to serve Orange County.
