Co-founder of bespoke floral design studio Gingermite, Mite Chan brings a sense of “romantasy” to Hong Kong through his arrangements. With an eye for detail and a passion for nature’s artistry, he speaks on his inspirations and how he creates poetry with Petals.

Our inspiration at Gingermite is deeply rooted in appreciating the beauty of nature. I like to draw from its endless variety and splendour. I also find inspiration in movements such as Art Nouveau, Impressionism and Fauvism, which emphasise and celebrate the fluidity and vibrancy of colours and bold expressions. We aim to recreate nature through our own vision.

We have to begin by understanding the character of each flower, which will allow us to use them as a language to tell a story through their colours and forms. By combining contrasting elements, we can create the unexpected and transform each arrangement into a narrative through the delicate interplay of textures and hues.

My favourite flower is the iris, because of its mythical association and surreal form. It’s perfect for incorporating into an arrangement to elevate its magic.

Each bouquet tells its own fascinating story. We hope our customers discover the beauty of nature through the narrative of our arrangements, as every arrangement tells its own unique story. Each flower represents a moment captured in time and the blend of each individual flower coming together can hopefully evoke a sense of emotional escapism.

We tend to focus on the form, shape and emotional projection of each flower to ensure our storytelling approach through each bouquet is abstract and intuitive. It’s all about the feelings each bloom evokes, and the emotions they conjure, allowing us to create arrangements that resonate with people both aesthetically and personally.

Mysterious and joyful is the vibe I’d go for if I were to design a signature bouquet. Perhaps by combining a variety of elements – deep, rich hues with lights and airy textures – we can create a bouquet that’s both intriguing and uplifting, while perfectly embodying our signature style of luxury and enchantment. Ultimately, my goal is to make someone’s day with my creations.

The satisfaction of creating beautiful arrangements is the most rewarding part of my job. I love bringing joy to customers; seeing their happiness and knowing that our creations have made an impact on their day is extremely rewarding and inspires us to continue doing what we do.
