Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers has bolstering his midfield among a list of transfer priorities this summer window.

Following Paulo Bernardo’s loan spell at Parkhead last term, the Bhoys remain in negotiations to try and find a deal with Benfica for the Portugal Under-21 international.

Nevertheless, reports last week emerged indicating that Celtic are also tracking Dundee midfielder Luke McCowan, who is into the final year of his contract at Dens Park.

Enjoying a breakout campaign in the top flight, the 26-year-old registered ten goals and five assists in 41 appearances across all competitions, and he is also believed to be attracting interest from clubs in the English Championship and Major League Soccer [Anthony Joseph].

Speculation is growing regarding his future, and one former Scottish Premiership man has dropped his verdict on what could come next for the versatile midfielder.

Writing for The Courier, former Dundee and Scotland man Lee Wilkie has indicated that his old club signing McCowan to a new deal would be their best bit of Business this summer, labelling him as someone with the potential to become a ‘talisman’ under Tony Docherty.

The former Ayr United man is believed to have an offer on the table to extend his time on Tayside; however, with Celtic sniffing around, it remains to be seen where his future lies.

Wilkie explained: “When the Celtic link hit social media, Luke’s agent must’ve been rubbing his hands together. After all, it means he’s got a player in negotiations with his club about a new contract, and now the champions of Scotland have been mentioned in connection with signing him.”

Later, he continued: “I’ve absolutely no doubt, having watched Luke McCowan in the middle of the park over the last few months, that he could not just be a part of that core group, but become a talisman for Tony Docherty.

“That’s why I think getting him tied to a longer contract could be the biggest deal of Dundee’s off-season.”

McCowan is clearly valued by Dundee, and it would be intriguing to see the kind of fee they would hold out for in the event of a potential sale, factoring in his contract situation.

Either way, Celtic need to widen their homegrown player pool and the man in question could be a savvy addition that would take up a domestically trained slot for European competition.

He would become another talented option to pick from in the engine room, and with a long season in store, McCowan would surely coMMAnd plenty of involvement.
