US pair Maverick McNealy and Michael Thorbjornsen are the frontrunners after day one of the 2024 RSM Classic, having each finished the opening round on eight under par on Saint Simons Island, Georgia.

At the Sea Island Golf Club, where the RSM Classic is being played on two courses, McNearly grabbed a share of the lead with a round of 62 on the Seaside Course. Thorbjornsen, meanwhile, scored 64 on the Plantation Course.

Ludvig Aberg came into the tournament as the defending champion and favorite, but the Swedish world No. 5 finds himself well down the field heading into day two. Making his first start since undergoing meniscus surgery, Aberg ended Thursday’s play on three over, in a nine-way tie for 135th place.

What is the RSM Classic prize purse?

The final event of the 2024 PGA Tour season, the RSM Classic comes with an $8 million overall prize purse.

According to the PGA, the winner at the Sea Island Golf Club will pocket just under $1.37 million in prize money, with the runner-up receiving $828,400. The third-place finisher is in line for a payout of $524,400. It should be noted that prize figures change if more than one player is tied for a single position; check out how those amounts break down on the PGA website.

In addition to prize money, the RSM Classic gives players a final chance to earn the FedEx Cup points they need to ensure a top-125 finish and full status on the 2025 tour.

RSM Classic: a brief history

Launched in 2010, the RSM Classic is organized by the PGA Tour together with the Davis Love Foundation, a non-profit created by Davis Love III. Per the RSM Classic’s website, the foundation “contributes to the well-being and progress of society by supporting both national and community-based programs that focus on children and their families”.

In the decade and a half since it was established, the RSM Classic has raised more than $42 million in aid of underprivileged children and families.

As the only Golfer to have won the RSM Classic on more than one occasion, America’s Robert Streb is the tournament’s most successful player. Streb was victorious in 2014 and 2020.
