Celtic’s “Absolutely burning” European Ambition
Celtic have a burning ambition to succeed in this year’s Champions League, according to manager Brendan Rodgers.
Speaking to the media at Lennoxtown this afternoon, the boss previewed the new campaign.
He swept aside any negativity surrounding the club’s transfer Business but also acknowledged the need for quality to be added to his squad.
The boss knows that his team is currently weaker than it was at the end of last season and that it has to improve over the next few weeks to comPete on all fronts.
While maintaining domestic dominance is key for the manager, he admitted that hitting heights with Celtic in Europe is an equally as important objective.
“We have to be better in Europe, it’s as simple as that”, he said (Clyde 1 Superscoreboard).
“We can’t beat around the bush, we look at where we’re at, we have to be better, but in order to be better, you need quality.
“If you go to improve in that (Europe), then, we need to find that (quality).
“That’s our drive, that’s our motivation, and the ambition is absolutely burning for us to be the best that we can be.”
The newly formatted Champions League, at least on paper, looks as though it will benefit Celtic.
The Bhoys will play eight different teams home and away in one big league table.
Finishing in a last 16 play-off place (8th to 24th out of 36 teams) is Rodgers’ objective. It is realistic, but for the goal to be met, the Premiership champions need to up the ante in the transfer market.
