Marvin Compper’s Lasting Celtic Love
Former Celtic central defender Marvin Compper still loves the Hoops and regularly checks up on their scores.
The German joined the Scottish Premiership champions in January 2018 for £1m [BBC] from Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig.
At 32 years old, Compper was expected to bring a wide range of quality and experience to Celtic’s backline upon making the move.
His switch to Glasgow, however, didn’t go as planned. The defender went on to make just a solitary appearance for the Hoops during a spell ravaged by injury.
Indeed, per Transfermarkt, Compper spent 200 days of his time at Celtic out with calf issues, missing 31 comPetitive Games.
His only appearance for the club came in a Scottish Cup tie with Morton.
Despite barely playing for the Bhoys, Compper still regularly checks up on his ex-employers’ results.
Speaking to The Celtic Way, Compper was asked if he still has a look at Celtic’s scores: “Of course I do,” he said.
“There is no grief whatsoever against anyone working at Celtic or who I worked with. Let’s just say on the professional side that it was an unlucky relationship. I cherished my time at Celtic on and off the field and I’m following them closely – or as closely as I can.
“Actually, they’re still in my Football app under my favourites, so I get the alarms and notifications when they have a Game or when they score!”
How poorly Compper’s time at Celtic panned out was unfortunate.
After a year and a half of bad luck, he left Glasgow to join MSV Duisburg in his homeland. There, the centre-half played for a year before retiring at the end of the 2019/20 season.
Now, the 39-year-old is assistant manager at Swiss top-tier outfit FC St. Gallen after a career which undoubtedly puts him in the ‘journeyman’ category.
