Old Dirt Parking Lot Gets Something New in New Paltz But Why?
If you have ever driven through New Paltz on a weekend, I don't have to tell you how bad the traffic can be. You eventually get through town, but you must be patient. Finding a place to park is the only thing harder than navigating the traffic.
New Paltz actually has a lot of parking but it can be hard to find if you aren't reading the signs while you are stuck on Main Street. Main Street has parking if you can find a spot otherwise there are lots throughout town but the catch is you have to pay for parking in most of them just like on many of the streets.
Where is Free Parking in New Paltz
It is rare to find free parking unless it is attached to a Business. Quite a few places in town have parking but it is reserved for their customers. One place that has always been hard for people to understand is the dirt lot just down from Water Street Market across from the old Groove Blueberry.
Right on the corner of Water Street and Main is a large dirt lot that many folks have parked in illegally. In the past, the owner of the lot would sit in it on busy weekends to ensure people didn't use the lot unless they were shopping at the Groovy Blueberry.
New Business is Coming to the Old Groovy Blueberry in New Paltz
Now that the Grovey Blueberry is gone the new Business, Windfall Farm Store and the Weedery which is due to open soon according to their website "The Herbal Confectionary" have also kept the lot for themselves. Customer Parking in New Paltz is a necessity.
Depending on where your Business is located you may be required to have a certain amount of spots. so no surprise that this new Business is protective of the parking as well.

It is in a great location so people could easily be tempted to park in the lot. which is right on the rail trail. It is just across the bridge from the R2R a very popular trail for walking and biking and it is next to one of the largest shopping areas in New Paltz the Water Street Market.

Currently, the lot which will soon be used for the Weedery is closed and it appears it is undergoing a makeover. It looks like the Windfall Farm Store may be putting in a barrier of some sort, possibly to make it hard to park there if you are shopping at the store.
Late last week someone started installing large wood boxes around the edge of the parking lot. There was a lot of speculation about what the rectangular Objects would be used for in the parking lot. I have some theories of why they are doing this but none of them are confirmed as of yet.
These are my ideas of what they are doing with these boxes.
1 - They are a border for the parking lot that will double as planters.
2 - They will mark the parking spots so people will know how and where to park their cars.
3 - They are going to put tall trees in them and create an outdoor space for The Weedery.
We will have to wait and see if any of my theories pan out. In the meantime, the lot is closed completely so know parking for now at all. And I feel like I should add that it appears that the parking lot is getting a facelift.
