Ange Postecoglou’s Spectacular Saturday Night Scalp
Former Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou led Tottenham Hotspur to an impressive victory at the home of English Premier League champions Manchester City last night.
As the Hoops ran riot in Edinburgh courtesy of a 4-1 win over Hearts, so too did Postecoglou’s Spurs at the Etihad Stadium.
Indeed, ‘Angeball’ was in full flow in Manchester as the visitors romped to a spectacular 4-0 victory.
James Maddison had Spurs in the comfort zone within 20 minutes, thanks to a quickfire brace. Pedro Porro made it 3-0 at the beginning of the second half before Brennan Johnson rubbed salt in City’s wounds in stoppage time.
It was perhaps the most impressive result of Postecoglou’s managerial career, but it only outlined the inconsistency by which his time at Spurs has been defined so far.
Last time out, for example, before visiting City, the North London side lost 2-1 at home to newly promoted Ipswich Town. They were also defeated away at Galatasaray in the Europa League before that.
Currently sixth in the English top flight, Postecoglou’s traditional second-season silverware likely won’t come in the league this season, although the cups and Europa League present the Aussie with the perfect opportunity to end Spurs’ 18-year trophy drought.
Celtic fans will keep a keen eye on proceedings when the former Parkhead gaffer takes his Spurs team to Ibrox in Europe in a few weeks.
