Tyler Guyton injury update: Will he play in the Cowboys’ preseason finale?

With the NFL season just around the corner, injuries are something every team would like to avoid, especially with their starters. It’s for this reason that most teams don’t play their starters in the preseason finale.

The Dallas Cowboys don’t plan to put any of their starters in their third preseason game against the Los Angeles Chargers this Saturday, but injuries are always a risk, even during practices. And on Wednesday, during their final padded practice in Oxnard, California, the Cowboys had a big scare when rookie offensive tackle Tyler Guyton exited practice early.

What happened to Tyler Guyton and will he play in the Cowboys’ preseason finale?

As Guyton exited the field and was led to the locker room, he was able to walk on his own without any sort of a limp. Fortunately, nothing serious occurred and Guyton was simply experiencing a bit of knee soreness, which is exactly what had happened last week with Cowboys wide receiver Brandin Cooks.

Guyton was the Cowboys’ first-round pick in this year’s draft and was initially going to start behind veteran tackle Chuma Edoga, but Edoga is now out with a toe injury for six to eight weeks, pushing Guyton up on the roster as the starting left tackle, at least to start the season. Guyton has had a stellar start with the team, standing out in training camp and in both preseason Games.

That’s why it’s a relief that Guyton didn’t suffer a serious injury. The Cowboys will likely exercise caution anyway and sit him out in the preseason finale so that he’ll be ready to go when the Cowboys open the regular season against the Cleveland Browns on Sunday, September 8. Guyton will be put to the test when he faces the likes of Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett, so making sure he’s fully healthy is top priority.
