This summer, like most in the recent History of FC Barcelona, has been one of change. A refreshed squad, a new coach and a different style of play ahead of 2024/25, as the Blaugrana looks to re-establish itself among Europe’s elite teams.

After losing out to Real Madrid by ten points last season, Barça have made a lightening-quick start to the new campaign. Hansi Flick’s side are the only team to win all three of their opening LaLiga fixtures and Robert Lewandowski has started the season in good goal-scoring form.

However they have failed to make an impact in the Champions League in recent years. Their last semi-final appearance came in 2018/19 and saw them squander a 3-0 first leg lead against Liverpool. Are they ready to challenge for the European crown once again?

The revamped competition features a new format for 2024/25, with all 36 teams taking part in a single ‘league stage’ division. Teams are divided into four pots based on previous performance and will play against two teams from each pot, including their own.

The fixture list for the league phase of the Champions League will be released on Saturday, August 31.

UEFA have confirmed the full league phase schedule for the competition. The action will begin on Tuesday, September 17.

How many times have Barcelona won the Champions League?

One of the most decorated teams in European history, Barcelona have been crowned continental champions on five occasions. Remarkably, all five of those wins have come in the Champions League era, since the rebranding in 1992.

Four of those Champions League wins came in a ten-year spell from 2005/06 to 2014/15 when Barcelona could justifiably claim to be the world’s preeminent team. Lionel Messi played a part in all four of those triumphs and the scale of his achievements with the team continues to cast a long shadow.

However there is a sense that Barcelona is now ready to forge a new path with a talented group of young Spanish players. Lamine Yamal, Gavi, Pedri and Pau Cubarsí are expected to be first team regulars this season and, fortified by the experience of Robert Lewandowski and Marc-Andre Ter Stegen, have the makings of a truly elite team.

Hansi Flick is embarking on his first season outside of Germany but boasts an impressive resume from his time in Bavaria. He took over Bayern Munich on an interim basis in November 2019 and led the team to a continental treble in his first season in charge, winning the Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal and Champions League. Now, he looks to recreate that success with Barcelona.
