Jordan Spieth reveals surgery plans after FedEx Cup exit
After a disappointing end to the 2024 season, Jordan Spieth has announced that he will undergo surgery to address a long-standing left wrist injury. The American Golfer ended his season at the FedEx Cup Playoffs event at TPC Southwind on Sunday.
Spieth has suffered with a left wrist issue - a torn sheath - sustained just a week before the start of the 2023 PGA Championship. He’s expected to be out of action for around three months after the surgery.
“I’ve got to have it operated on ASAP, and then I’ll go through the process of what I’m supposed to do from there,” Spieth said after Sunday’s disappointment. “If I don’t have a reason to try to rush back - which I don’t - I’ll probably just take it as slow as I can.”
Jordan Spieth misses out on BMW Championship
Spieth was among the 70 players who took part in the FedEx St. Jude Championship over the weekend. However he failed to finish in the top 50, meaning that he will not advance to the second tournament - the BMW Championship - and his PGA Tour journey is over for the year.
Given his injury issues, this poor performance at the FedEx Cup Playoffs was no major surprise. Spieth, previously a world No. 1, was ranked at 43rd going into the St Jude Championship and he had failed to make the cut at eight of his 21 tournament appearances this year.
“I kept trying not to make excuses for myself because it didn’t hurt when I was swinging,” Spieth said, reflecting on his struggles in Memphis this weekend. “But it doesn’t seem coincidental based on the amount of time, and really the results being the exact same every single week. So I’m very hopeful.”
After avoiding surgery for more than a year Spieth will finally go under the knife in the upcoming off-season. Spieth described 2024 as the most frustrating year of his career but he remains in good spirits for his injury recovery.
