It seems like Jerry Jones has been the owner of the Dallas Cowboys forever, and indeed he’s been the owner longer than he hasn’t. The Cowboys began as an expansion team in 1960 under the ownership of H.R. “Bum” Bright. Jones bought the franchise in 1989 for $140 million (around $342.8 million today). The Cowboys are now the most valuable Sports team in the world, worth $9.2 billion.

The pre-Jerry era was one of glory, with head coach Tom Landry taking the team to the Super Bowl five times with two victories. However, the last one they won under Landry was in 1978, the last appearance in 1979, and when Jerry took over 10 years later, he was ready to move on to a new head coach.

How many Cowboys coaches have worked for Jerry Jones?

One of the first controversial things Jerry Jones did after becoming the Cowboys owner (I say first because that list has GROWN in 35 years) was fire beloved Tom Landry. As the only head coach the franchise ever knew after 29 years, Landry had become somewhat of a legend in Dallas. But Jerry was ready to win more Super Bowls, and so he hired his Arkansas college teaMMAte Jimmy Johnson to be head coach. Jimmy Johnson was the first of eight head coaches that have worked under Jerry Jones in 35 years.

There was some controversy there as well. Despite Johnson bringing the team to two Super Bowl victories, Jerry did not like sharing control over the team and it caused a lot of tension between he and Johnson. There was quite the power struggle. As a result, Jerry fired Johnson and hired Barry Switzer. With the Triplets - Troy Aikman, Michael Irvin, and Emmitt Smith - already set up on the team, Switzer was able to bring them to one Super Bowl victory in 1995, and well…I guess you know that’s the last one the Cowboys ever saw.

Here’s the complete list of head coaches for the Dallas Cowboys under Jerry Jones:
