Markquese Bell injury gets Cowboys' special teams coordinator John Fassel emotional

As if losing yet another game in their home stadium weren’t enough, the Dallas Cowboys lost five players to injuries during their loss to the Houston Texans on Sunday.

One of the more gruesome of the injuries was what happened to safety Markquese Bell. During one of the Texans' kickoff returns, Bell was covering returner Dameon Pierce and lunged in for a tackle, but when he did, his arm bent back awkwardly.

He had to be helped off the field by medical personnel and was ruled out for the rest of the game, clearly in pain. It’s possible that Bell is dealing with a dislocated shoulder, which would require season-ending surgery.

John “Bones” Fassel gets emotional discussing Markquese Bell injury

The Cowboys' special teams coordinator, John “Bones” Fassel was asked to talk about Bell’s injury during an interview on Tuesday, and he couldn’t help but get emotional.

“Yeah, that one hurts,” Fassel said. “He’s played as good of special teams ball through 10 Games as I can remember. He got hurt doing what he does best, just flying in there and diving.”

“He’s gonna be okay, but gosh...” Fassel trailed off, fighting tears. “I spend so much time with these guys in meetings and on the practice field and on the Game field. The emotions of going undrafted and wanting more and accepting his role and thriving in his role. I’m hurting for him, because he was on a mission. He was as good as we’ve had in a while.”

“You develop such a tight relationship with these guys,” he continued. “These young men are very human and they want so much out of their career and I want it for them. You don’t want to start staring down the pipe of, ‘How long do I get to coach these guys for?’ They’re special humans, what they do on a daily basis is very unique...It’s a great room. They fight. They just want to compete.”
