Atalanta star Ederson couldn’t believe Celtic shipped seven goals to Borussia Dortmund and reckons it was a freak result.

On Champions League matchday two, the Hoops were thumped 7-1 by the German giants on a night when everything that could have gone wrong did.

The Bhoys were embarrassed and cannot afford a similar result and performance tomorrow in Bergamo.

Atalanta, though, are an elite side and will undoubtedly cause the Scottish Premiership champions several problems.

Brazilian international midfielder Ederson, however, is refusing to take Celtic’s result in Dortmund as gospel.

He thinks they will be much better tomorrow and pose a real attacking threat to Atalanta’s backline.

“This is not an easy match for us,” admitted Ederson (RecordSport).

“Celtic’s last defeat in the Champions League was like an accident. They are a good team and I’m convinced they’ll show a reaction in Italy.

“People who believe the Scots will be comfortable to play against are mistaken. I couldn’t believe an experienced goalkeeper like Kasper Schmeichel conceded seven goals [vs Dortmund].

“Obviously, there was a difference between the teams. But it was an excessive defeat for Celtic. We’ve watched them and they are a team who can cause their opponents many problems in attack.”

Although the Hoops may pose a threat going forward, their defence remains suspect.

Some lapses in concentration at the weekend against Aberdeen saw the Celts concede two in the space of just 10 minutes.

Such frailties have been apparent in the Bhoys’ past few matches against decent opposition, and they will need to be eradicated tomorrow or else Brendan Rodgers could be looking at another European heavy scalping.

Cameron Carter-Vickers’ recovery could prove key if Celtic are to get anything in Italy. We await the manager’s update on the American central defender in his pre-match press conference.
