Official SFA’s VAR Report From Celtic’s Draw With Aberdeen Released
The Key Match Incident Review Panel has ruled in favour of all VAR interventions in last week’s heated 2-2 draw between Celtic and Aberdeen, including the contentious handball claim that arose in the final moments of the match.
In the 102nd minute, Alistair Johnston struck a powerful volley toward goal, with Aberdeen’s Duk blocking the shot in what was the last action of the Game.
Celtic players immediately surrounded referee Nick Walsh, claiming that Duk had handled the ball and demanding a penalty. After a review, VAR supported the on-field decision, and the Game was brought to a close without awarding a penalty.
Since the match, no clear video evidence has surfaced showing the ball striking Duk’s hand. The angles available suggest that the ball made contact with his thigh, although there was some arm movement that raised suspicions among Celtic supporters.
The review panel has now confirmed Walsh’s call, stating: “The on-field decision was unanimously supported. The panel highlighted that the Referee was in a credible position to make the call and that the Aberdeen defender did not use his arm to block the shot.”
With the panel’s ruling, the decision stands as correct, even if the incident continues to spark debate.
This is another positive that has happened since Willie Collum has taken over as head of referees. We’re getting these reports published weekly, rather than having to wait for incidents to build up.
