Andy Townsend shares who he thinks is the bigger club… Celtic or Manchester City
This is an argument about Celtic (and Rangers sometimes) that always seems to rear its head at some point in the season.
Celtic being compared to teams in England is such a tired old argument considering there are so many outside contributory factors that conflate the argument.
Many Football fans down south believe that having more money and having the ability to sign some of the best players in the world means you are automatically a big club.
Others think that the size of the stadium bestows that stature. And whilst both contribute to the argument, they are not the deciding factor.
Celtic are a bigger club than Manchester City
Manchester City are undoubtedly one of the richest clubs in the world. We all know it’s down to the investment put into the club by the Abu Dhabi United Group.
But the reality is that before that investment came, City had not won a major honour since the 1976 League Cup or had any global appeal since their finances allowed them to sign the likes of Robinho and Erling Haaland.
And that led to Andy Townsend sharing why he believes Celtic are a bigger club than the current English Premier League champions.
When pushed by Andy Goldstein on who he thought was a bigger club Townsend said [talkSPORT], “Celtic are a bigger club, probably.
MORE CELTIC STORIES
“From what I said earlier about global appeal, Celtic.”
Celtic have been one of the most successful clubs in Europe. With 53 league titles, 41 Scottish Cups, 21 League Cups and a European Cup win in 1967 by the legendary Lisbon Lions, Celtic’s trophy history is long and illustrious.
Celtic also have hundreds of supporter clubs around the world [Celtic FC Foundation] with clubs listed in far-flung places like South Korea, Norway, Kenya, Japan and Australia.
With a predicted global fan base of over 9m supporters [The Scotsman] Celtic’s global appeal has never been stronger and just keeps growing.
So whilst Man City might have the cash of a major global Business, they don’t have the same appeal or History as Scotland’s most successful club.
