‘Winner Takes the Cup’ – Celtic and Aberdeen Set for High-Stakes Semi
Frank McAvennie eagerly awaits this weekend’s League Cup semi-final at Hampden, convinced that the clash between Celtic and Aberdeen could determine the League Cup winner.
The former Celtic striker sees Saturday’s matchup as an early final, given the current form of both teams.
McAvennie’s confidence in the significance of this fixture stems from Aberdeen’s impressive form under Jimmy Thelin, which has seen them come from 2 goals down at Celtic Park to draw and win against Rangers, all while keeping their unbeaten streak going.
As per RecordSport McAvennie said: “Yeah, I think so. Whoever wins on Saturday wins the cup. That’s what I think.
“I wouldn’t be too sure about Rangers beating Motherwell on Sunday either. Hampden is going to be heaving on Saturday, both sets of fans will be there in numbers and you saw how lively Pittodrie was the other night. It was absolutely bouncing.
“It’s set to be a fantastic Game of Football. This would have been a great final. Seeing Aberdeen against Rangers, they have a confidence about them and a never-say-die attitude. They are dangerous.”
It’s always a tough match when Celtic face Aberdeen at Hampden. Just look at the Scottish Cup semi-final last season. Celtic needed extra time and then nailbiting penalties to edge the Dons and make it to the final.
This year’s meeting at Hampden will be even tougher, with Aberdeen on a high.
Then, just three days later, Celtic will host RB Leipzig. Two of the biggest Games of the season come within three days of each other, making it an extremely busy week for Rodgers’ side.
Celtic aren’t back in action until the Sunday, so they get an extra few days off before they Travel to Rugby Park to face Kilmarnock, who are starting to pick up form.
