Why are there no Copa América games today, July 3?
The Copa América 2024 has become a staple of our lives over the last two weeks, during which time the group stage has been completed. All 16 teams have played three fixtures, with eight going through to quarterfinals and the other eight going home. Lionel Messi’s Argentina and a Neymar-less Brazil fall into the first category, while the USMNT are among the latter.
With just eight matches in the tournament left (that includes the third-place playoff), the Games will no longer be coming as thick and fast as they have been up until now.
Following the conclusion of Group D on Tuesday (July 2), the Copa América has its first day off on Wednesday (July 3), giving the remaining hopefuls time for some rest and recuperation before the knockout stages get underway.
Copa América quarterfinal draw and schedule
The Copa América 2024 quarterfinals begin on Thursday (July 4), with Group A winners Argentina taking on Ecuador, who finished in Group B, in the sole fixture. The days of two matches per day are almost but not quite over, as the Colombia - Panama and Uruguay - Brazil ties will both be played on Saturday (July 6). The Venezuela - Canada clash is sandwiched in between on Friday (July 5).
As well as Neymar, Brazil will also be without Vinícius Júnior for their mouthwatering last-eight clash against Marcelo Bielsa’s team.
When are the Copa América 2024 semifinals and final?
Once we have our four semifinalists, you’ll have to get through a two-day break with no Copa América action. The last-four ties will be played on Tuesday July 9 and Wednesday July 10, with the another short hiatus before the tournament concludes with the third-place playoff on Saturday July 13 and the final on Sunday July 14.
