It has been confirmed this morning that Glasgow will host the 2026 Commonwealth Games [The Herald], and Celtic are consequently on alert.

Celtic Park played a central role in the city’s successful hosting of the 2014 edition, holding the spectacular opening ceremony. Parkhead could be used in a similar capacity when the Games return to Glasgow, but there are only 10 sports in 2026 compared to 17 the last time around.

During the 2014 Games, Celtic were forced to move to Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh for a brief spell while their iconic ground was utilised. Although this temporary switch was inconvenient for the team and fans, it was a necessary adjustment given the global attention the Games brought to Glasgow.

For Celtic, the use of their stadium again in 2026 could present both challenges and opportunities. The Games run from 23 July to 2 August 2024, impacting the Hoops’ early-season fixtures, meaning a potential relocation.

On the other hand, if used, Celtic Park stands to benefit financially from the international spotlight. Rental fees for the stadium during the Games will likely boost the club’s coffers, and the exposure will only enhance its already strong global reputation.

As details emerge about the venue allocations for the 2026 Commonwealth Games, all eyes will be on Celtic Park, awaiting potential confirmation of its role.
