A new era has dawned on Anfield. After eight years in charge, Jurgen Klopp opted to leave Liverpool at the end of 2023/24 and left the club in search of a new direction. The Liverpool hierarchy settled on Arne Slot, the Dutch coach who led Feyenoord to the Eredivisie title during his three years in charge.

Liverpool secured a third-place finish in Klopp’s final season, ensuring that they return to the Champions League for 2024/25. Historically Liverpool have often fared better in continental comPetition than they have in the Premier League, and Slot will be looking to continue their proud European record this year. They began the 2024/25 campaign with a 3-1 victory over AC Milan at San Siro.

Here’s how the Reds’ schedule looks for the remainder of the league phase...

The revamped comPetition features a new structure for 2024/25 with all 36 teams taking part. Teams will comPete in a single ‘league stage’ division. For the draw teams are divided into four pots based on previous performance and will play two fixtures against teams from each pot, including their own.

When is Liverpool’s next Champions League game?

Arne Slot’s side have a two-week break from Champions League action, before returning in early October. Liverpool will host Bologna on 2 October, with kick-off set for 3:00 p.m. ET.

The most successful English team in continental comPetition, Liverpool have been crowned European champions on six occasions. Four of those wins came in the club’s golden era in the 1970s and 1980s, but they have also enjoyed real success more recently.

Liverpool lifted the Champions League under Rafa Benítez in 2004/05 and Jurgen Klopp lead the club to its sixth Champions League title in 2018/19. There have also been a number of near misses, losing finalists in 2006/07, 2017/18 and 2021/22.

The Reds retain many of the key players for their 2018/19 triumph, although some of those Anfield legends may soon be leaving the club. Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Djik and Trent Alexander-Arnold are all entering the final year of their contracts, meaning that they would be free to discuss terms with other teams in January. If any of those club icons were to leave, a triumphant final season would be a fitting crescendo to their Anfield careers.
