His mother, Anne (née Barrett), is an accomplished artist and painter, while his father, Edward “Chips” Hardy, is a novelist and comedy writer known for his work on the TV series Peaky Blinders (2013 to 2022) and Taboo (2017). 

Hardy spent his formative years in East Sheen, where he struggled with alcoholism and delinquency. In his teenage years, he was expelled from school and was arrested for joyriding while in possession of a gun. 

He began his education at Reed’s School before moving to Tower House School. He started out in the Entertainment industry with HBO’s TV miniseries Band of Brothers (2001), followed by his feature film debut with Ridley Scott’s Black Hawk Down, which was released the same year. After that, he began dating assistant director Rachael Speed, and they welcomed a son in 2008. Unfortunately, their relationship lasted only until 2009. That same year, Hardy met actress Charlotte Riley while filming Wuthering Heights, and their connection quickly grew. They got married in 2014 and have since welcomed two children into their family.

In addition to his personal life, Hardy is also known for his charitable work.
