With a goal to make art accessible to everyone, SUE CHANG brings a playful touch to Hong Kong’s cultural scene with Art Bay Studio in Repulse Bay, where young imaginations are free to flourish.

Fashionista, writer, mother of two and now entrepreneur, there’s seemingly nothing Sue Chang can’t do. Inspired by the boredom brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic, Chang found a new calling in art, leading her to open the doors of Art Bay Studio, a play-led arts space for children in Repulse Bay. Armed with the desire to inspire young minds, her goal is to create a haven for youngsters to explore their artistic pursuits, while at the same time still finding time to mindfully explore her passions for beauty, fashion and style.

What inspired you to start Art Bay Studio?

When Covid hit and everyone was stuck in the city, I took a ride down to Repulse Bay and was instantly drawn to this space with floor-to-ceiling windows, overlooking the sea. I knew I wanted to transform it into a place of relaxation and comfort, and the idea of Art Bay Studio was born. Having a studio has also always been a dream of mine, and that moment felt like a calling to make my dreams come true.

What’s a typical day like at Art Bay Studio?

Every day is different, and that’s the beauty of it. On weekdays, the studio retains its relaxing atmosphere, peppered with the sound of laughter, since most of our students are children. In the evenings, it becomes my own personal space to relax and unwind. On the weekends, we like to host events and parties for our community.

How do you balance creativity and Business in Art Bay Studio?

I’d like to say that creativity can’t be controlled, only nurtured, which is why we keep a very freestyle atmosphere at Art Bay Studio. Our main goal is that everyone who walks into our studio simply finds enjoyment in the process of painting, and we always try to provide a space for everyone to explore their creative expression. I also find that Travelling fuels the soul of my creative spirit. Whenever I Travel abroad, I take time to visit different studios to cherry-pick good practices and inspiration to bring back to my own space.

Art Bay Studio is a cozy respite away from busy Hong Kong.

What’s a common mistake new Business owners make?

Almost every new entrepreneur is full of passion and drive, but this sometimes means the foundational groundwork is unintentionally overlooked and isn’t well prepared for such a big change. From my own experience, at the age of 27, I impulsively started a Business – a mother- daughter clothing brand – without realising how difficult it is to maintain it with so many obstacles to overcome. It’s essential not to start from a blank slate but to begin with a myriad of foundational knowledge and professional preparation: read books, seek advice from experienced individuals, don’t rush in and take the time to learn.

What’s the one style advice you swear by?

Find a fashion icon who resonates with your own style, and analyse the way they carry themselves. It’s best to highlight your own charm first then find external glamour to supplement it.

Chang is a style and fashion icon.

What’s the one beauty product you can’t live without?

Because I have dry skin, I simply can’t live without my moisturising spray. It’s perfect for busy days when I can’t manually apply moisturising cream. I also always use an essence after my moisturisation routine; I recommend the Helena Rubinstein Black Bandage Cream – my skin feels as refreshed as after a good night’s sleep. I also carry with me a tinted lip balm to help heal my dry lips.

How does Hong Kong’s fashion scene iNFLuence your style?

Hong Kong’s fashion scene is so diverse, which I value so much because everyone has their own personality and doesn’t blindly pursue the same style. It gives me a greater sense of comfort to pursue more daring looks.

Describe your personal style in three words.

Feminine, elegant, modern.
