Real Reason Lakers Are Wasting LeBron James’ Final Years Revealed

The Los Angeles Lakers are coming off a disappointing 2023-24 NBA season that saw them get eliminated in the first round of the playoffs.

Fresh off a Western Conference Finals bid, many expected L.A. to be a legit contender in the West.

That didn’t end up happening, though. Rather the team struggled throughout the regular season and then got mostly dominated in the playoffs.

At times this year, particularly ahead of the NBA Trade Deadline, many thought L.A. might push all its chips in and try to get some fresh talent. LeBron James’ time in the league is winding down, after all – and the Lakers would be wise to maximize his final years.

Ultimately, when Rob Pelinka and Co. didn’t pull the trigger on a move at the NBA Trade Deadline, many assumed they would do so this summer.

This week, Jovan Buha of The Athletic revealed why that won’t be the case.

“Quick read would just be I feel like they go 70 to 80% in,” he said.

“..I would lean more toward like you mentioned the two and a half picks. I would probably lean toward two more than three… I guess that’s like 70 to 80 percent in terms of like if you’re going all in, you’re trading all three picks, you’re throwing in pick swaps, you’re throwing in basically any tradable guy to to upgrade the roster.”

Buha didn’t stop there, though.

“I don’t know if they go that aggressive with it but I think that there will be some sort of middle option where they are again using a pick or two, using a couple the rotation guys, maybe using a pick swap, second-round picks.

“I don’t think they go like fully all in that would surprise me but I think there’s kind of a three quarter of the way there and they sort of split the difference a little bit.”

The Lakers were recently linked to a 3-team trade and are one of two teams that have prepared offers to the Cleveland Cavaliers for Donovan Mitchell.

That said, if they aren’t willing to go all in with massive offers, it is hard to see either coming to fruition.

Will the Lakers be able to get anyone of note this summer? Time will tell.
