One of the most unexpected stories involving Celtic in the season gone by was Liam Scales’ emergence.

After returning to the Hoops last summer following a loan spell with Aberdeen, not much was expected of the defender.

Amid a wealth of injuries, though, Scales got an opportunity at the beginning of the campaign and never looked back.

He moulded into a key player for Brendan Rodgers and despite criticism over some of his performances, he was one of few Celtic players who remained fit and reliable throughout 2023/24.

The 25-year-old’s emergence came with several positive consequences, one being his international career taking an upturn for the better.

Scales is now a regular for Ireland, and new Aberdeen signing Gavin Molloy has admitted he wants to emulate his Parkhead success and get into the national team.

Having recently joined the Dons from Shelbourne, the 22-year-old was asked if his move would improve his chances of playing for his country.

“Yes, I think it will improve my international chances”, he said (RecordSport).

“Look at Liam Scales. He came over to Scotland and got his opportunity in the national team. I feel I can get there. I have confidence and trust in myself. That is the place I want to go to get into the Ireland team.”

Another man Molloy namedropped after he signed for Aberdeen was Adam Idah.

The Cork native looks to be finally on his way to signing permanently for Celtic after a summer of uncertainty, and Molloy played with him at youth level.

“Nathan Collins, Adam Idah and Jason Knight were all in my age group. I played against all of them when I was young in emerging talent groups. It was in the regional set-ups.”
