Millionaire HGTV star Chip Gaines slammed for ‘out of touch’ money comment as he beefs with college basketball fans
HGTV fans want Chip Gaines to put his money where his mouth is.
The “Fixer Upper” alum, who starred on the popular home renovation show with his wife, Joanna Gaines, between 2013 and 2018, upset fans after he made an “out of touch” comment about money while beefing with College Basketball fans on X Wednesday.
As colleges reportedly attempt to poach Baylor University’s head basketball coach Scott Drew, Chip, who is a proud graduate of the Texas university, seemingly implied Drew will remain with Baylor because he’s not money hungry and it’s God’s will.
“Money is boring.. everybody’s got money🙄,” he tweeted in reply to the Barstool Kentucky X account begging Chip, 49, and Joanna, 45, to stay “away from Scott Drew for the next 48 hours.”
“We’ve got God on our side.. ✨😉,” he added.
Fans were unimpressed by his answer and slammed him for being so dismissive about the importance of money.
“Chip Gaines has always creeped me out. How out of touch can you be? I guess his ‘God’ made him filthy rich,” one seemingly disgusted user tweeted.
“Said by someone who doesn’t have to worry about money,” another added.
A third angry fan penned, “Money is boring when you have tons of it, but what about the poor that Jesus championed? What about compassion and trying to help the helpless?”
Yet another angry person wrote, “Man I love your show and all, and I absolutely get joking about basketball – but this tweet is not cool. The majority of people in this country worry about money because they don’t have enough of it.”
Chip — who is worth an estimated $50 million with Joanna, according to Yahoo Finance — took note of the criticism and decided to clap back.
He replied to several X users that if they followed his assistant on the social media platform, they could work out a deal for him to help them in an unspecified monetary way. He specifically told one user he would send them “something to help out” while he promised another person that he would give them $100. Chip also promised he would donate to another person’s cause of choice.
Representatives for the media mogul did not immediately respond to Page Six’s request for comment.
As mentioned above, Chip and his wife, with whom he shares five kids, became wildly popular once “Fixer Upper” debuted on HGTV in 2013. They have since used their fame to launch a multi-media empire.
He and Joanna rebranded Discovery’s DIY channel with a revamped home and lifestyle network called Magnolia in 2022. They soft-launched the brand with a season of “Fixer Upper: Welcome Home” that debuted on Discovery+in 2021.

The network now hosts an array of shows, such as Joanna’s cooking series “Magnolia Table with Joanna Gaines” and her show about a plant shop, “The Retro Plant Shop with Mikey & Jo.”
Their life and style brand, Magnolia, has also been sold exclusively at Target for years, where fans can also find their memoirs and Joanna’s cookbooks.
And of course, they made a tourist destination out of their quaint hometown of Waco, Tex. with their Magnolia Silos and Market, which takes up two city blocks in the downtown area and boasts six boutique shops, a bakery, a coffee shop, a church and more.
They also opened a hotel, Hotel 1928, in Waco and offer several hand-designed bed and breakfast options for guests to enjoy their time in the beloved town.
