Real Madrid rack up UCL/European Cup semis
Since the inception of the Champions League in 1992, Los Blancos have qualified for the last four of Europe’s top men’s club competition on a record 16 occasions. That’s four more times than arch rivals Barcelona, who are the club with the next-highest total of semi-finals to their name.
If you include the pre-Champions League era, when the tournament was known as the European Cup, Madrid have reached 32 semi-finals. Bayern have the second-best tally of semis since the European Cup was created in 1955 - but are well behind the Spaniards, on a distant 20.
Can Madrid continue UCL semi-final streak?
Should Carlo Ancelotti’s men book a semi-final berth today, it will be Madrid’s fourth successive appearance at that stage of the competition.
While that would certainly rank as an impressive achievement, Los Merengues would remain only halfway to equalling their Champions League-record eight straight semis, a mark set between 2010/11 and 2017/18.
Eight-time finalists since 1992, Madrid hold the distinction of having won more Champions League semi-final ties than any other club. Their total of eight last-four exits is also a record.
