The Detroit Lions drafted Amon-Ra St. Brown in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL Draft and the Californian wide receiver has become a key part of Dan Campbell’s system.

After impressing in his first three seasons with the Lions, St. Brown signed a lucrative contract extension that could be worth $120 million ($77 million guaranteed) across four years. That deal makes him the highest-paid wide receiver in the NFL, quite a feat for a 112th overall pick.

He grew up in California but his mother, Miriam Brown, was born in Leverkusen in Germany. She impressed upon him the importance of speaking other languages and Amon-Ra St. Brown speaks German and French fluently, in addition to English.

Amon-Ra’s name was chosen by his father, James Brown, who wanted his children’s names to reflect African naming traditions. James was a sporting star in his own right, winning the Amateur Mr. Universe twice (1981, 1982) and being named Mr. World on three occasions. That combination of a multicultural upbringing and athletic genes have clearly served St. Brown well and, still only 24 years old, he has a big future in the league.

“St Brown has earned this,” said Lions’ executive Brad Holmes back in May, when St. Brown’s bumper contract extension was announced. “We just felt like you know he’s an elite player, he’s truly earned it. He represents and embodies everything that we’re about.”
