Outspoken pundit Chris Sutton led a rightful defence of former Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou live on BBC Radio 5 Live on Monday night.

According to English midfield journeyman Mike Brown, the Aussie boss was under pressure amid a string of inconsistent results prior to Saturday’s 4-0 thumping of Manchester City.

Indeed, Spurs went to the Etihad and silenced their doubters by unexpectedly pulling off a shock victory over Pep Guardiola’s all-conquering champions. It was a typical display of ‘Angeball’ and a performance and result in which Postecoglou’s methods worked perfectly.

Brown claimed that the win was much needed because the pressure was starting to build on the Aussie gaffer. Sutton, however, shut down such a claim.

The ex-Celtic striker defended Postecoglou: “It’s rubbish,” he said.

“So hang on a minute This is a Tottenham team who haven’t delivered a trophy for however many years, and all of a sudden Postecoglou is under all this extreme pressure to deliver a trophy?

“It doesn’t make any sense. ‘Under pressure’ sounds like he’s a step or two away from the sack. That is absolute nonsense.”

Postecoglou has been plagued by inconsistency throughout his spell in North London, but his side is currently just three points away from third place in the English Premier League.

Spurs are in no way the finished product, although as the seasons go on, their fans become increasingly hungry for a trophy.

They have not won anything since 2008. At the start of the season Postecoglou defiantly yet truthfully stated he ‘always’ wins things in his second season at clubs [BBC]. It remains to be seen whether that record will continue at Spurs.
