Scotland star and Aston Villa captain John McGinn has admitted stories about his failed move to Celtic wind him up, while also refusing to shut the door on a potential move to Parkhead in future.

The 30-year-old has spent over six years at Villa Park, making 250 appearances across all comPetitions.

He joined the English side from Hibernian in 2018 after he looked all but set to sign for the Scottish Premiership champions. Amid Celtic’s financial unwillingness, however, McGinn’s dream move to his boyhood club fell through.

More than half a decade on, he has admitted speculation about how the deal didn’t come to fruition annoys him: “The stories about that whole saga have grown arms and legs over the years, and it winds me up,” he said (Premier Sports Scottish Football Social Club).

Despite this irk, McGinn refused to rule out a future move to Glasgow’s east end.

He said: “You never say never.

“When I was young, all I ever dreamed about was playing for Celtic, and I didn’t ever see myself playing for Aston Villa.

“But I have got two-and-a-half years left at Villa, whether that sees me off or if I’ve still got something left in the tank we will see. You never know.”

McGinn is the Biggest Celtic ‘What Could’ve Been’

Given his continual success at both club and international levels, McGinn is Celtic’s biggest ‘what could’ve been’ in recent History.

It remains to be seen whether he would have developed in the manner he has at Villa had he signed for the Bhoys instead. Regardless, though, Celtic fans have the right to feel slightly disheartened whenever they hear of his successes.

A future move to Glasgow’s east end would likely be welcomed by the Parkhead faithful, but they won’t want their club to sign an ageing, sub-par McGinn.
