The Great Northern Catskills of Greene County are home to many treasures – from the stunning natural beauty of the landscape to the rich literary and artistic heritage immortalized by Thomas Cole and Washington Irving. Perhaps the crowning jewel is the highest cascading waterfall in New York State – Kaaterskill Falls. Dropping in two tiers over 260 feet, Kaaterskill Falls has been one of the region's most popular destinations for centuries.

Buttermilk Falls State Park

Buttermilk Falls State Park takes its name from the foaming cascade formed by Buttermilk Creek as it flows down the steep valley side toward Cayuga Lake. The upper park has a small lake, hiking trails through woodlands and along the gorge and rim, picnic areas and playing fields. The lower park has a campground, natural pool and playing fields, beyond which is Larch Meadows. Larch Meadows is a wetland area through which a nature trail winds.

Minnewaska State Park Preserve

Located in Ulster County, NY Minnewaska State Park Preserve is situated on the dramatic Shawangunk Mountain ridge, which rises more than 2,000 feet above sea level and is surrounded by rugged, rocky terrain. The park features numerous waterfalls, three crystalline sky lakes, dense hardwood forests, incising sheer cliffs and ledges opening to beautiful views, clear streams cut into valleys, 35 miles of carriage roads and 50 miles of footpaths on which to bike, walk, hike and simply enjoy. And, all this within an hour and a half drive from New York City.

Enfield Falls

Popular among families for its lifeguarded swim area, Enfiled Falls (or Lower Falls) at Robert Treman State Park is the most visible of the park’s dozen waterfalls. To truly experience the park, hike any of the trails that parallel Enfield Creek as it plunges almost 500ft through 2.2mi Enfield Glen.  Enfield Glen is the scenic highlight of Robert Treman State Park. This is an area of rustic beauty with craggy gorges and winding trails bearing "fire and brimstone" names like 115ft tall Lucifer Falls and Devil's Kitchen. Come explore our historic Gristmill with interpretive signs.

Fawn's Leap

Fawn's Leap is a 24' high waterfall located in Kaaterskill Creek just above Moore's Bridge. The etymology of Fawn's Leap is contested, and historians have tried to determine how the popular spot got its name for a long time. The most common story is that a doe and fawn tried to cross the water, and the fawn failed to jump after its mother, falling into the falls. In one story, the fawn lives, in another, it does not. Whatever is true, it is a popular place to cool off on a hot summer's day.
