Business Beat: Citizens, Johnston offers plant-based food options. Plants trees along Greenway.

Woonasquatucket River Watershed Council Greenway receives 30 new trees as a result of Citizens’ new plant-forward partnership as collaboration will also bring plant-based protein options to Citizens’ Johnston campus

Citizens is launching a new partnership with its national foodservice partner Eurest to support employee health and wellbeing at Citizens’ Johnston campus and in the community. Citizens is introducing The Plant-It Food Co., an innovative plant-based protein, and kicked off the endeavor with by planting 30 new trees today along the Woonasquatucket River Watershed Council (WRWC) Greenway.

By making plant-based food options available at our Johnston campus and supporting the maintenance of the green areas in the communities where we live and work, we strive to improve the wellbeing of our colleagues and communities.” said Citizens Head of Property and Procurement Michael Knipper. 

The Plant-It Food Co will now be served on Citizens’ campus through national business and industry foodservice provider, Eurest, combining forces to offer workplace dining options that are good for people and planet. The Plant-It Food Co. supports tree planting and reforestation projects where their products are available. This marks The Plant-It Food Co.’s latest U.S. foodservice launch.

This partnership is the perfect package because it not only allows us to deliver on that expectation through new-to-the-U.S. plant-based proteins, but will have a lasting impact on the Johnston community as we work for the good of people and planet,” said Eurest VP Wellness and Sustainability Suzanne Landry.

In collaboration with the Arbor Day Foundation, more than 50 volunteers planted 30 native trees and shrubs, including Yellow Birch, White Pine and Mountain Laurel, along the Woonasquatucket River Greenway in Johnston with the Woonasquatucket River Rangers. Additionally, volunteers documented fungi with the RI Mycological Society and were led on a flora and fauna walk by 15 Minute Field Trips.
