Which driver has the most F1 world championships? Full list of title winners
Max Verstappen moved level with Alain Prost and Sebastian Vettel on the all-time Formula 1 leaderboard on Sunday, as the Dutchman secured the fourth World Drivers’ Championship of his career at the Las Vegas Grand Prix.
Verstappen edges Norris in Las Vegas to clinch title
Needing to finish in front of title rival Lando Norris to clinch the 2024 championship, the Red Bull driver came fifth in Nevada, one place ahead of the Briton.
Having won 10 points to Norris’s nine at the Las Vegas Strip Circuit, Verstappen has established a 63-point lead over the McLaren driver in the overall standings, with only 60 points still available on the two remaining weekends of the F1 season.
All four of Verstappen’s world titles have come in consecutive seasons, since the 27-year-old was crowned champion for the first time in 2021.
“To stand here as a four-time world champion is something I never thought was possible,” Verstappen said post-race.
Who has the most F1 world titles?
Verstappen remains three F1 Drivers' Championships behind the two most successful drivers in the competition’s history, Lewis Hamilton and Michael Schumacher, who each have seven titles.
Schumacher, who spent an illustrious 18 seasons in F1 before retiring for a second time in 2012, won two world titles with Benetton in 1994 and 1995, before joining Ferrari and adding five straight championships between 2000 and 2004.
Schumacher’s 2003 triumph saw him surpass Argentine Juan Manuel Fangio’s long-standing record of five Drivers’ Championships, won in 1951, 1954, 1955, 1956 and 1957.
Hamilton secured his maiden F1 title with McLaren in 2008, before switching to Mercedes in 2013 and winning the drivers’ crown in six out of seven seasons between 2014 and 2020.
Verstappen rises up all-time F1 standings
Verstappen now sits joint-fourth on the list of F1’s most decorated drivers, alongside Prost - who won three titles with McLaren and one with Williams in the 1980s and 90s - and former Red Bull driver Vettel, who was champion in four straight seasons between 2010 and 2013.
