Eight animal welfare groups form RI Veterinary Access to Care Coalition to ensure pet care

New Coalition to Increase Resources and Access to Pet Care Launches in R.I.

The Rhode Island Veterinary Access to Care Coalition consists of 8 leading animal welfare organizations across the Ocean State

In response to a growing lack of access to veterinary care and its threat to animals and their welfare, eight of Rhode Island’s leading animal welfare organizations have banded together to launch a new collaboration. The Rhode Island Veterinary Access to Care Coalition (RIVACC) has been established to help ensure every Rhode Islander has equitable access to essential veterinary services.

RIVACC consists of Friends of Animals in Need, Potter League for Animals, Providence Animal Control, Providence Animal Rescue League, Rhode Island SPCA, RI Veterinary Medical Association, RIVMA Companion Animal Foundation (CAF), and Volunteer Services for Animals. The coalition is committed to working together to safeguard the health and happiness of pets across the state. 

“The Health of Pets is a top priority, and the coalition has come together to help serve as a one-stop shop for Pet owners in need to understand and identify the programs and services available to them,” said RIVACC leader M. Christie Smith, CAWA. “Pets are important, bonded members of our families and every Rhode Islander deserves access to veterinary care, regardless of their financial situation.”

A nationwide shortage of veterinarians, coupled with the rising costs of care and inequities in finding affordable care have created barriers for pet owners to access even the most basic medical care for family pets. These challenges represent a threat to owned pets and a burgeoning animal welfare crisis.

With the launch of the coalition’s website, riPetcare.org, Pet owners can easily find detailed information on resources and assistance available to Rhode Island Pet owners in one convenient place. Some of the services include rabies clinics, spay/neuter, financial assistance, urgent care, and Pet food pantries.

Each member of the coalition has funds and expertise to assist with veterinary care for families and pet owners. The motto of the new coalition is, ‘Caring for your Pet, Together.’

“This is all about working together to reach more pet owners and to offer support more effectively,” added Smith. “Enhanced collaboration and communication among local nonprofits already doing great work is key to helping companion animals.”

The coalition is ready to work with pet owners, veterinarians, and other animal welfare organizations to provide the best services possible.
