Celtic have rekindled negotiations with Benfica to secure a deal for Paulo Bernardo.

The young Portuguese midfielder, who impressed during his loan spell at Parkhead last season, is high on Brendan Rodgers’ wish list.

The Hoops boss is eager to bring the 22-year-old back permanently, confident that an agreement can be reached despite the ongoing haggling over the fee.

RecordSport revealed that Benfica are holding out for £6 million, but the Scottish champions are optimistic about sealing the deal for closer to £4 million, potentially with a sell-on clause included. Discussions are happening on a daily basis, and Bernardo himself is keen on a return to Glasgow, where he made a significant impact last season.

Rodgers, speaking after Celtic’s 1-1 friendly draw with Ayr on Friday night, emphasised the need for patience in the transfer market. “These things take time,” he noted, hinting that the pursuit of Bernardo might not be swiftly resolved.

Nonetheless, Rodgers is determined to secure Bernardo’s services after the midfielder’s memorable performances last season, particularly his standout moments against Rangers that helped Celtic clinch a domestic Double.

Some reports last month claimed Celtic couldn’t match Bernardo’s wages. CeltsAreHere can confirm that those reports are completely false.
