Taylor Swift has taken the world by storm with the incredible phenomenon that is the Eras tour, which has now arrived in Europe. With almost half her European tour dates having passed, one thing is for certain: Swift is nowhere near finished giving her loyal fanbase an experience to remember. We take a look at Taylor Swift and some of her best moments from the Eras tour in Europe thus far.

Taylor Swift is an icon, a legend, and a queen. 

Few artists can rally their faNBAse the way Swift has managed with hers, many of whom have turned out to the record-breaking Eras tour en masse to celebrate life, love, and the ineffable bond of friendship. Over the past year, Swifties have ‘made the friendship bracelets’ and ‘taken the moment and tasted it’. The resultant Swiftomania has left the world, Swifties and non-Swifties alike, in awe. 

And what well-earned awe it is.

The incredible phenomenon that is the Eras tour lies in more than just the continued rise of Swift’s Celebrity status. Swift’s incredible star power has provided heretofore untold economic impact in nations that have hosted her tour, with reports suggesting it has generated billions in earnings for local Businesses. Boasting a heart of gold, the starlet is known to have quietly donated to food banks along her tour route, a generous action that has benefitted the local needy. At the same time, Swift is also known to employ exclusively local Businesses to fulfil the needs of her crew, helping to stimulate the economy at an unprecedented level for a tour of this magnitude.

Beyond its economic impact, of which Europe is already beginning to see its effects, Swift’s Eras tour has also had an incredible run amongst attendees, with numerous iconic moments having gone viral on social media. Only Taylor Swift could inspire mother nature to send lightning at the crux of her most passionate performances; likewise, only Swift can leverage the serendipitous release of fireworks unrelated to her show and inspire in-flight homages by airline captains ferrying hundreds of Swifties to the next Eras tour show. And, only Taylor Swift could draw Tom Cruise to her performance in lieu of attending his daughter’s graduation. 

While it’s certainly a compliment, we’re not entirely sure Swift, who is famously family-oriented, would approve.

As Swifties ourselves, we’ve had the time of our lives fighting dragons with the singer, and watching how she has broken through adversity, heartbreak, and critique to blossom into the woman she is today. The Tortured Poets Department gets its time to shine 

Up until the Paris, Europe unveiling of The Tortured Poets Department set in the Eras tour, Swifties had only easter eggs and clues to bank upon. As Swift descended upon Paris on May 9, 2024, it was to thunderous applause. Having been released the previous month to critical success, the record-breaking TTPD set in the Eras tour proved equally iconic, from the marching band madness of The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived to the ethereal vision of Swift sweeping across the stage screaming “Who’s afraid of little old me?” 

Taylor Swift refreshes her wardrobe 

Along with the inclusion of The Tortured Poets Department in the Eras tour, Taylor Swift also unveiled a brand-new updated wardrobe. From adding bodysuits and blazers in new colours to the Lover set to completely overhauling the 1989 set with a mix-and-match approach, Swift’s new looks quickly swept across social media, heralding a whole new era in the Eras tour as she embarked upon Europe.

Swift has long been a champion for smaller emerging artists, and her Eras tour has proven to be the ultimate platform for many such artists to blast off into the hyperspace of success. Without claiming credit for spotlighting now-successful artists, Swift has ensured that, by bringing them along for the ride, they are afforded the opportunity to perform in front of crowds of thousands. Among acts who have opened for Swift are Gracie Abrams, Paramore and Sabrina Carpenter — further adding to her list of opening acts, Swift announced on May 27 that rising stars Benson Boone, Griff, and Mette would be opening alongside Paramore for her first three London tour dates.

Taylor Swift vs Edinburgh’s extreme weather conditions

Ask anyone who has ever been in the Scottish side of town, and they’ll tell you that every day is sweater weather. For Swift, whose Eras tour outfits are sometimes composed of teeny tiny bodysuits, boy shorts, and sleeveless dresses, performing in the harsh extremes of Scottish weather proved to be a challenge. On the first night of her Edinburgh stop, Swift’s hand cramped up onstage during her acoustic section, leading to the inclusion of gloves during the Tortured Poets Department set.

Fan footage has since surfaced of Swift joking during her Midnights set that she would like to ‘keep her jacket’ for additional warmth. For context, on the days of her performances in Edinburgh, the temperature averaged 7 to 9 degrees Celcius in the evenings. We can all agree that Swift has shown incredible tenacity and dedication for not swapping out her spangled bodysuits in favour of cosy cardigans. 

A duet for the ages

During the acoustic set of Swift’s second night in London on June 22, the singer brought onstage her longtime friend and collaborator, Hayley Williams of Paramore to perform a duet of Castles Crumbling. The song, which was initially released as a bonus vault track on Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) addresses the fallacies of fame and how lonely it can be growing up in the public eye — a sentiment that the two iconic women certainly share amongst themselves.

Over the past year, the Eras tour has broken numerous records, cementing Swift’s place as one of the most sought-after and successful artists of our time. In the same vein, Swift clinched yet another record on June 21, the night of her first performance in London. With Swift performing for a crowd of 88,400, the Eras tour became the biggest female concert of the decade in Europe. The record was previously held by Lady Gaga, whose Chromatica Ball show at Stade de France in Paris on July 24 2022 was attended by 78,000 fans.

While the Eras tour has been an incredible golden thread in the tapestry of 2024’s most iconic pop culture events, all good things must sadly come to an end. At the hallmark 100th show of the Eras tour, which was celebrated in Liverpool on June 13, Swift shared the earth-shattering news that broke Swiftie hearts the world over: Come December, the Eras tour would end. 

Speaking to the crowd during the Red era, the songstress expressed gratitude for her fans, saying, “This has definitely been the most exhausting, all-encompassing, but most joyful, most rewarding, most wonderful thing that has ever happened in my life, this tour.”

She went on to add that, “When I’m not on the stage, I’m dreaming about being back on the stage with you guys, and you have done so much to be with us, right? You’ve made plans so far in advance, you planned what you were going to wear, you memorised the lyrics, you got yourselves here, you figured out parking, you figured out transportation, and, I want to spend the hundredth show just thinking about that and living in this moment.” 

Gracie Abrams graces the Eras tour stage (again)

Having released her second studio album The Secret of Us on June 21 2024, American singer Gracie Abrams is no stranger to Taylor Swift’s Eras tour stage. The daughter of film director J.J. Abrams (of Star Wars fame) and producer and actress Katie McGrath, Gracie spent much of 2023 opening for Swift’s North America shows. The duo soon developed a fond friendship, which eventually led to the duo writing Us along with Aaron Dessner of The National. Dessner, who has worked with Swift on multiple albums including Folklore and Evermore, also served as a producer for the track, alongside another longtime Swift collaborator and friend Jack Antonoff. 

During the acoustic section of the June 23 show, Swift brought Abrams up onto the stage, and the duo performed Us together, with the former on the guitar and the latter on the piano.

An integral part of the Eras tour experience, the acoustic section — also known as the Surprise Song section is a love letter to Swift’s expansive discography. With a carefully curated selection of 45 songs in the predetermined setlist of the Eras tour and their various eras, hundreds of other songs unfortunately do not receive their time in the spotlight. Through the acoustic section, Swift can pay homage to these songs, many of which are fan favourites. In these performances, Swift often mashes up two or more songs for an even more impactful and tear-jerking performance. 

On June 14, Swift’s second night performing in Liverpool, hearts were set aflame and emotions ripped to shreds when she performed a mash up of You’re Losing Me and The Great War. Both songs are widely acknowledged amongst Swifties as having been written at time of great discord in Swift’s previous relationship with ex Joe Alwyn, with heartbreaking lyrics that recall loneliness and desperation. As one might expect, a mashup of these two fan favourite songs garnered an overwhelming response, both on-site and on-line. 

We have not recovered, and our hearts are still broken. 

Taylor Swift recognises a fan in the crowd 

Is there any more iconic moment in pop culture history than that of Taylor Swift peering at a fan in a crowd before mouthing, “Do I know you? From the last show?” We think not. 

Swift calls on security to help a fan in need 

If there’s one person you can trust to love and truly stick up for her fans, it’s Taylor Allison Swift. Swift has a longstanding history of extending care and support to her fans, and these same considerations remain even when she is performing on stage. On June 7, her first night in Edinburgh, Swift was in the middle of performing Would’ve, Could’ve, Should’ve from Midnights when she noticed a fan in need of some help. In her true giving fashion, Swift refused to continue performing until it was confirmed that the fan was fine. 

Prince William dances to Shake It Off 

Several things have occurred in past months that were not on our 2024 Bingo cards. Among them: Confirmation that Buckingham Palace (and its royal inhabitants) are Swifties. In a startling and yet incredibly heartwarming act of welcome for the American singer, the Buckingham Palace band played a cheery rendition of Shake It Off ahead of her London concert dates. Little did we know what the gesture foretold. 

Celebrating his 42nd birthday, Prince William, who recently attended the Trooping the Colour parade alongside his cancer-embattled wife Catherine, Duchess of Wales, took to the VIP stands to ‘Shake It Off’. The monarch-in-waiting was accompanied by two of his children, Prince George (10) and Princess Charlotte (9).

They were also accompanied by William’s royal cousin Zara Tindall (daughter of Princess Anne) along with husband Mike Tindall and their daughters Mia and Lena. The royals even managed to snag a selfie with Swift afterwards, cementing the evening as one of the most iconic in pop culture History.

When Travis Kelce first emerged onstage the Wembley Stadium on night three of the Eras tour in London, fans could not believe their eyes. Adorned in dapper garb alongside fan favourite backup dancer Kameron Saunders, Kelce took part in the musical interlude that follows The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived, playing his role with the inimitable charm we have all come to know and love. Inspiring dreamy sighs and cheers from the crowd, Kelce swept Swift up into his arms in a bridal carry, before ‘bringing her back to life’ to perform I Can Do It With A Broken Heart. 

The Chiefs tight end, who famously took his shot by making a friendship bracelet for Swift a year ago, manifested the relationship of his dreams, and his unending support of his girlfriend has earned him much love and praise amongst Swifties. It does not pass unnoticed among fans that Kelce is credited as the man who quite literally brought Swift back to life. His presence on the stage in the lead-up to I Can Do It With A Broken Heart seems to scream of karmic poetic justice. 

And to that we can only say: Trav, honey — you’re the reason she no longer has to do it with a broken heart. 

Paul McCartney dancing to But Daddy I Love Him 

While Sir Paul McCartney and Taylor Swift have long been friends, it is still incredibly heartwarming to see him come out in support of her. Attending the Eras tour in Wembley Stadium on its third night in London, the former Beatle danced the night away to But Daddy I Love Him. Rounding off the list of musical greats who chose to spend their evenings in celebration of Swift’s music, McCartney was also accompanied by Jon Bon Jovi and Genesis lead singer Peter Gabriel.  

Kameron Saunders’ We Are Never Getting Back Together wisecracks continue 

Over the past hundred Eras tour shows, backup dancer Kameron Saunders has quickly become a fan favourite for his whip-smart responses during Swift’s performance of We Are Never Getting Back Together. This same trend has continued throughout the Eras tour performances in Europe, with Saunders bringing his iconic sass, infusing his responses with local verbiage to the amusement of all in attendance. 

From “Up yours, w–nker!” to “Do one, tosser!” it’s safe to say Swifties are in for a wild ride where Saunders’ spirited shouts are concerned. 

Taylor Swift swallows a bug

On her second night in London, Swift shared her ‘sold out’ status with rock band Foo Fighters, who were also performing while on tour across town. Speaking to the audience during a break in the band’s set, founder and lead singer Dave Grohl appeared to take shots at Swift, sharing that the Foo Fighters tour should be called the Errors tour. 

Taylor Swift’s Eras tour has famously been called the Errors tour amongst netizens and Swifties, with hundreds of compilations online that fondly recall all the little mishaps that have occurred through its over-hundred shows, including those in Europe. 

Grohl then went on to say that his band’s errors were because they “actually play live.” Swift, who is noted for performing and singing live, appeared to clap back with the help of an unlikely, if serendipitous event: She swallowed a bug. 

Following the unfortunate situation, Swift choked out, “I swallowed a bug. Can you sing?” before continuing to perform, ever the professional — but it wasn’t long before she had to pause to cough at an opportune moment, clearing out her throat. Ironically, this isn’t even the first time that Swift has swallowed a bug mid-performance — but it certainly should be enough to deter naysayers from questioning the authenticity of her performances for a good while.
