The creators of this Amazon Prime Video original series took on the Herculean task of presenting Tudor History with a fantasy spin, and it is safe to say My Lady Jane ticks off all the right boxes. Created by GeMMA Burgess, it premiered on 24 June 2024, and fans took no time to make it a slow-burn smashing hit. Swashbuckling action-adventure, deadpan heroism and regicidal foes, this show is the perfect concoction for a high-octane bing-fest. Such is its success that speculations about My Lady Jane season 2 are already on the rise.

The eight-part historical fantasy series with an underlying romantic comedy theme is based on the bestselling book series by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton and Jodi Meadows. If you have watched the first season and kept your fingers crossed for a follow-up, we bring you all the details.

Despite such great popularity, Amazon Prime Video is yet to give a green signal for a second season. This is in line with the streaming platform assessing the long-term performance of the series and whether it will retain high viewership over a substantial period.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Burgess hinted at the possibility of a season 2. She admitted that the first season took the audience up to a climax where Jane would be beheaded. If extended, the series will explore how she would survive under Queen Mary’s reign.

“[A second season is] always a possibility. We wanted to really lean into the visual storytelling of taking a woman up to the point of being beheaded. It seemed like an opportunity too good to pass up,” Burgess added.

Commenting on what might be in store for the future, Burgess said, “If we are fortunate enough to get a season 2, then we are going to be exploring all of them growing up and moving on and figuring out how to survive in the world where Jane is free, but the kingdom is not. Because Mary’s still on the throne. There’s a lot more work to do before things are right.”

In an interview with Collider, stars of the show Emily Bader (who plays Lady Jane Grey) and Edward Bluemel (who plays Guildford Dudley) spilt beans about their hopes for the characters.

“I would like to see Guildford continue backing up Jane and helping her out on her journey. That’s what Guildford’s there for. For lots of reasons, he’s a very different person at the end of the series than he was at the beginning, and finding his new lease on life and maybe even a glimmer of joy, here or there,” said Bluemel. What does he have to say about the renewal? “I’ve been told nothing. They won’t answer my emails.”

Bader, on the other hand, added, “They are all still there with Crazy Mary. She needs to buckle down and figure out what she’s gonna do. She feels very responsible. I think badass Jane can take it up a notch.”

Screenrant reports that the first season has already used the source material entirely. Although the second book in the series My Plain Jane thwarts Lady Jane’s saga, Burgess has her ideas in place and is determined to continue with her unbelievable escape from execution. In fact, if My Lady Jane season 2 receives a go-ahead, it might become a rival to Netflix’s reigning historical fiction show Bridgerton. With things still up in the air, fans await a positive response from the streamer.

My Lady Jane season 1 story and cast

My Lady Jane offers a different perspective of the ‘Nine-Day Queen’ of England. Instead of portraying herself as a damsel in distress, as was common for women of the time, Lady Jane Grey emerges as a headstrong individual who can solve her own problems and fight her own battles.

When her mother sells her for marriage to the highest bidder, Jane discovers her husband-to-be, Guildford Dudley is an extremely charming and rouge rake with a dark secret which can bring doom to both. When Jane suddenly becomes the monarch after her cousin King Edward VI (played by Jordan Peters) is murdered, it makes her vulnerable to the rebels contending for the throne. Meanwhile, among all the political conspiracies, humanity is divided between ‘Verity’ (ordinary human beings devoid of magic) and ‘Ethians’ (people with the power to turn into magical creatures).

Amid all this chaos, a passionate love story blossoms between Lady Jane and Guildford, leading up to her coronation and execution.

The show also features Kate O’Flynn as Queen Mary, Isabella Brownson as Katherine Grey, Rob Brydon as Lord Dudley, Anna Chancellor as Lady Frances Grey and Abbie Hern as Elizabeth I, aka Bess. While there are no details about which characters shall reprise their roles in a probable second season besides the protagonists, we wish for Queen Mary, Elizabeth I and the narrator to continue their roles.

My Lady Jane: Reimagining true historical events

The show retells the short-lived reign of Lady Jane Grey who became the Queen for just nine days.

Lady Jane Grey was born in the autumn of 1537 as the eldest daughter of Lady Frances and Henry Grey, 3rd Marquess of Dorset, and the great-granddaughter of Henry VII. She inherited the crown from her cousin King Edward VI on 9 July 1533 in an unsuccessful attempt to prevent the Catholic Mary Tudor from ascending the throne.

Within 14 days of arriving at the Tower of London for her coronation, Lady Jane Grey was imprisoned by her Catholic cousin Mary I who declared her claim to the throne. Although she was hesitant in punishing her sister, Mary I had to take a drastic step as Lady Jane became a growing threat as Protestant rebellions plotted to replace Mary I.

On 12 February 1554, Lady Jane Grey was executed on Tower Green at the age of 17. Was she an innocent victim of the men plotting around her or a Protestant martyr, remains shrouded in mystery.
