Former New York Yankee Hideki Matsui is to throw the ceremonial first pitch ahead of Game 5 of the 2024 World Series, as the 27-time MLB champions continue their bid to stay alive against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Yankees still alive after Game 4 triumph

In Game 4 yesterday, the Yankees avoided elimination by beating the Dodgers 11-4 in New York, cutting Los Angeles’ series lead to 3-1. However, the Dodgers remain one win away from victory in the best-of-seven championship contest, and will get their second chance to claim the Commissioner’s Trophy when the teams again go head to head at Yankee Stadium tonight.

The Yankees are attempting to pull off the unprecedented; no team in the 121-year history of the World Series has come back from 3-0 down to be crowned MLB champions.

Who is Hideki Matsui?

Matsui spent 10 seasons in MLB between 2003 and 2012, enjoying the crowning moment of his North American career with the Yankees. In 2009, the designated hitter starred for New York as the franchise won its most recent championship, beating the Philadelphia Phillies 4-2 in the World Series. Matsui, nicknamed “Godzilla”, won the World Series MVP award.

A two-time All-Star, Matsui also played for the Los Angeles Angels, the Oakland Athletics and the Tampa Bay Rays in MLB. Before moving to the United States, he was a three-time Japanese champion with the Yomiuri Giants in the Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) league, earning the Japan Series MVP award in 2000.
