Luis Díaz was back training at Liverpool’s AXA facility on Friday. The winger. The 27-year-old played the full 90 minutes in both of Colombia’s 2026 CONMEBOL World Cup qualifiers - both Games ending in defeat for La Tri. The team were beaten 3-2 in the first to Uruguay, a Manuel Ugarte strike deep into stoppage time denied Colombia a point. That was followed by a home defeat to Ecuador. Results which leave the team fourth in the standings on 19 points and still in with a good chance of qualifying.

Lucho’s performances were below what was expected of him - no goals and no assists in either Game. He’ll be looking to put that right on Sunday against Southampton and next week when Real Madrid visit Anfield.

His first few months of the season have been outstanding despite not being an undisputed starter for Arne Slot. He has scored nine goals and provided two assists in 16 official matches (11 in the Premier League, 4 in the Champions League and 1 in the League Cup). He is the team’s second top scorer behind Mohamed Salah (on 10 goals).

The great campaign that Díaz is having along with the rumors linking him with Barcelona for quite some time will encourage Liverpool to sit down and negotiate a new contract with the player. His contract ends in June 2027, but in England, it is customary to start the conversations and make the first proposals two years before a deal expires. In Lucho’s case, that means starting from next summer.

Salah, Van Dijk and Alexander-Arnold, the priorities

First Liverpool have to sort out the situations of three key first team stars. Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold will all be out of contract in seven months' time. If none of them end up renewing on 1 January, they will be free to negotiate with any club without needing to be authorized by Liverpool.

For that reason, the club is working flat out to strike new deals before Christmas. Conversations are progressing and the mood is positive that most or all of them will prolong their stay beyond June.

Three others who will end their contract with Liverpool in 2026: Ibrahima Konaté (25 years old), Andy Robertson (30 years old) and Caoimhin Kelleher (25 years old). Perhaps the only one who will end up renewing is the French centre-back due to his age and importance in defence. The Irish goalkeeper is the same age, but is looking for regular playing time and has hinted that he might have to move on to find it.

Robertson has been at the club since 2017 and while he has been a magnificent servant, the Reds need to look to the future and have already started the search for his eventual replacement at left-back.

Contractual saga: Lucho, Alisson, Jota...

The Liverpool Echo describes next summer’s contractual negotiations as a “saga” which the club will have their work cut out to resolve. There are eight players, including Luis Díaz, whose contracts expire in June 2027.

Alisson, Joe Gómez, Endo, Curtis Jones, Harvey Elliott, Diogo Jota, Kostas Tsimikas and Conor Bradley will be entering the final two years of their respective deals and The aim is to keep the vast majority of them.

Alisson‘s situation will be up for review. The Brazilian has been a mainstay in the side since joining from Roma in 2018. But he has struggled with injury problems and remains out with a hamstring issue.

Galatasaray are reported to be preparing an offer for the 32-year-old Brazil international. The Reds have prepared for a potential scenario in which they might lose Alisson, Caoimhin Kelleher - or both, buy signing Giorgi Marmadashvili from Valencia. Ideally, they want two top class keepers in the squad to make sure they are covered for the rigors and demands of playing in multiple competitions.

Liverpool already have three fairly obvious contractual sagas to resolve in the coming weeks and months. But regardless of the outcome, this is just the beginning, as only six of Slot’s current players are committed to the club beyond 2027.

The Premier League resumes this weekend with Liverpool top of the table on 28 points. Slot’s men are guests of Southampton, the team occupying bottom place with just four points.
