Tom English has stuck up for Celtic right-back Anthony Ralston amidst a wave of criticism surrounding his role in the Scotland team.

The Hoops defender has started the last seven Games for his country, standing in for injured duo Aaron Hickey and Nathan Patterson.

Aside from a costly error against Switzerland and a clumsy penalty giveaway versus Poland at Hampden last month, the 25-year-old hasn’t really put a foot wrong.

Much like he does for Celtic, Ralston has stood in at a time when his country needed him and done a dependable job.

Despite this, the defender faces continual criticism from several sections of the Tartan Army.

Ahead of this evening’s crucial UEFA Nations League match against Portugal, several fans would like to see Aberdeen’s Nicky Devlin introduced to the starting lineup ahead of the Celt.

Recently, while speaking on the Scottish Football Podcast, English, chief Sportswriter at BBC Scotland, rightfully defended Ralston.

“I’m going to stick up for Anthony Ralston here,” he said.

“Look at the Games that he’s played: Germany, Switzerland, a must-win against Hungary with the pressure on him, and the last three against top class opposition.

“You’re asking him to repeatedly punch above his weight whilst all this negativity has been crowding in around him and he’s not playing much for Celtic as well.

“He’s got a lot of mental strength, this guy.

“I do admire what he’s trying to do – he’s got a lot of dog in him.”

If he plays, Ralston must be at the top of his Game tonight against a star-studded Portuguese side.

Like most of his international teammates, the Celt was admirable in his performance in Zagreb at the weekend, but as much as Scotland’s performances are improving, results also need to get better.

Even getting a draw will be difficult this evening as Cristiano Ronaldo and Co. visit Glasgow’s southside.
