UEFA has handed Celtic a one-match away fan ban, following the lighting of flares by supporters during their recent Champions League clash against Borussia Dortmund. The governing body acted after Hoops fans defied repeated warnings, setting off fireworks in the lead-up to their 7-1 defeat in Germany.

While the sanction will undoubtedly concern the club and supporters, the ban has been suspended for two years. This means that Celtic fans can still make the trip to Bergamo next week to see their side take on Atalanta in the Champions League. However, should any further incidents occur during this period, the ban could be activated, preventing fans from attending a future away fixture.

In addition to the suspended ban, Celtic have been hit with a €20,000 fine. UEFA’s official statement read:

“Charges against Celtic FC: Lighting of fireworks, Art. 16(2)(c) DR

Decision: The CEDB has decided: To fine Celtic FC €20,000 and to ban Celtic FC from selling tickets to its away supporters for a total of one (1) UEFA club comPetition match, for lighting of fireworks. Said ban from selling tickets to its away supporters is suspended for a probationary period of two (2) years, starting from the date of the present decision.”

This isn’t the first time Celtic have faced UEFA sanctions for pyro use, with the club’s ultras regularly flouting the rules on fireworks, especially at away grounds. While fans will be free to Travel to Italy next week, any repeat behaviour could see the ban enforced before the end of the campaign, which would be a blow to the Travelling Celtic support.

The club will need to address the ongoing issue with its support, as further breaches of UEFA regulations could result in heavier fines and potentially more severe sanctions down the line. For now, though, all eyes will be on Bergamo to see if Celtic’s away fans heed the warnings or risk triggering the ban this season.
