Sutton Lays Out Whats Really Going on in SPFL Title Race
Chris Sutton has shared his thoughts on the Scottish Premiership title race, weighing in after a midweek showdown that saw Celtic extend their lead while Rangers faltered. Sutton, who was on Sky Sports duty for the Aberdeen-Rangers clash at Pittodrie, witnessed Aberdeen’s determined 2-1 win over the Ibrox club, a result that helped put them and Celtic nine points clear of Rangers.
With Sutton offering his trademark blunt assessments, he didn’t hold back in addressing the title contenders or Rangers’ ongoing struggles.
Celtic’s former striker, while impressed with Aberdeen’s performance, still backs his old club to lift the league title this season. Sutton laid out his views on Sky Sports Scotland, explaining why he thinks Celtic have the edge but also recognising the tenacity of Jimmy Thelin Aberdeen side.
“Aberdeen are in a title race. Based on what? Based on performances and based on points,” Sutton said Live on Sky Sports during the Wednesday broadcast, giving credit to Aberdeen for their fighting spirit. Despite his respect for the Dons’ recent form, Sutton is still confident in Celtic’s squad depth and quality. “Do we all think Celtic have a stronger squad? Absolutely, they do. I still think Celtic will win it,” he stated, showing he has no doubt about the Bhoys’ capacity to stay on top.
Sutton highlighted Aberdeen’s resilience, especially in holding off Rangers’ late attacks on Wednesday night. “Just the sheer guts, I mean, honestly, what a storm they weathered,” he added, praising Robson’s tactical use of substitutions and the players’ belief in each other. Aberdeen’s impressive late-Game composure, according to Sutton, speaks to a newfound strength that’s ignited a connection between the team and their fans.
While Chris ultimately believes Celtic have what it takes to defend their title, he acknowledges Aberdeen’s rise as a serious contender.
Meanwhile, Rangers face mounting pressure to turn their season around after falling nine points off the pace. Sutton’s analysis, grounded in a realistic view of the title picture, suggests that although Celtic are still favourites, Aberdeen’s momentum could quickly become a major thorn in their side.
