Celtic fans got some good news on Friday morning as the club announced a long-term contract extension for Alistair Johnston, keeping the Canadian international at Parkhead until the summer of 2029.

The new deal underscores Brendan Rodgers’ commitment to securing the club’s top talents at their peak years as part of his vision for sustained success.

Johnston, who joined Celtic in 2022, has quickly established himself as a fan favourite and an integral part of the squad.

This season, the 26-year-old has been in outstanding form, registering nine goal involvements and thriving under Rodgers’ setup.

Speaking about his development, Johnston credited Rodgers and the coaching staff for helping him reach new heights.

He told CeltsAreHere: “Since Brendan’s come in, I think he’s elevated me to another level all together, he’s put a lot of trust in me, the whole coaching staff has and really empowered me to not only be a leader but an attacking full-back to just try and dictate the play with my physicality and everything.

“It’s something I’ve really enjoyed and I’ve felt that I’ve grown as a player. I’m entering the prime years some would say of a Footballer’s career. It’s exactly where I want to be for my prime years and continue to grow and see what I become.”

It’s great to get Alistair Johnston tied down to a new deal. He’s been a great player for Celtic since he made his debut at Ibrox and has risen up the leadership ranks, and has now worn the captain’s armband on a few occasions this season.

While the contract doesn’t necessarily mean that Johnston will stay with Celtic until 2029, it does ensure that Celtic are protected and demand a big fee if a club does come in for him.

But it also shows that the player is more than happy where he is, and isn’t looking for a move elsewhere.
