Chris Sutton has defended Celtic and former manager Ange Postecoglou from the flawed views of English pundit Robbie Savage.

On BBC 606, the pair discussed Postecoglou’s recent run at Tottenham, where things have been up and down, to say the least.

Spurs emphatically defeated Manchester United at Old Trafford a few weeks ago but lost 3-2 to Brighton seven days later despite leading 2-0 at the break.

Savage and many pundits and personalities within English media circles have criticised Postecoglou for having one set way of playing.

They think he needs to be more adaptive, despite his style serving him well at Celtic, where he won five trophies out of six in two years.

Sutton and Savage recently debated Ange’s style.

“It doesn’t matter how you win…it’s all about results, Chris,” said Savage.

“There’s all different ways to win Football matches, and how you win it, that’s the most important thing. It’s about results.

“So when you talk about Spurs, entertaining, you know, Ange Postecoglou will be judged on winning Football matches, not Entertainment value.”

After Savage criticised Postecoglou’s methods, Sutton hit back, defending the Aussie’s reputation.

He said: “He has 25 years plus in management. Hang on a minute, and he’s won things, so I don’t know why you’re bringing him up. So he’s had a hugely successful coaching and management career, where he’s always won. Why are you bringing his name up?”

Savage soon returned, saying: “But at Celtic, they should win.”

This ignorant remark annoyed Sutton, who told Savage that he wasn’t getting the point.

“We’re not talking about just at Celtic; we’re talking about 25 years in management,” said the ex-Celt.

“No, but you’re missing the point there because that’s what certain club’s fan bases want.”

Savage Doesn’t Get It

Celtic fans want to see the club win in style, particularly on the domestic scene.

The Hoops are known for playing a dominant, attacking style of Football that gets fans off their seats.

Postecoglou bought into such a tradition, and his Footballing morals ensured his success in Glasgow’s east end.

The Aussie’s principles haven’t changed throughout his managerial career and despite some tough times at the start of his Parkhead stint, the supporters stuck with him and recognised the powerhouse he was building.

Their faith paid off as Postecoglou has proven methods of success; perhaps Savage should show similar patience.
