With references a-plenty to his pop star girlfriend Taylor Swift, NFL player and newly-minted actor Travis Kelce is chalking up rave reviews and reactions for his performance on FX’s new horror drama Grotesquerie. Here’s what the internet has to say.

Take a break from speculating if Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce are breaking up and turn your attention to FX’s brand-new horror drama series, Grotesquerie. First premiering on September 25, the show is headed by creators Ryan Murphy (American Horror Story, Nip/Tuck, Glee), Jon Robin Baitz (Doctor Odyssey, Brothers & Sisters, Stonewall), and Joe Baken (Doctor Odyssey). Beyond its stellar lineup of creators, Grotesquerie has one more ace up its sleeve: Travis Kelce.

Grotesquerie in a nutshell

The series centres Detective Lois Tryon (portrayed by Niecy Nash) who joins forces with a nun, Sister Megan (portrayed by Micaela Diamond) to solve a series of unsettling crimes terrorising the local community. Along the way, Tryon must navigate the events of her personal life, from her waning feelings for her comatose husband Marshall (Courtney B. Vance) to her casual flirtation with Ed Laclan (Kelce), an orderly in the facility where Marshall is kept.

With four episodes currently available for streaming in its 10-episode lineup, Grotesquerie has already chalked up plenty of rave reviews, with fans lauding the Chiefs tight end for his easy on-screen charm and charismatic performance. While Kelce marked his first Grotesquerie appearance in Episode 3 — The Bender — he will also appear in every episode for the rest of the season.

Travis Kelce’s acting career so far

Having gained massive pop culture points in the past year for shooting his shoot and succeeding with The Taylor Swift, Kelce’s casting in Grotesquerie came as little surprise. The NFL star has long cultivated a charmingly all-American presence on television. He first appeared on Catching Kelce (2016), an E! reality dating show that centred Kelce as he navigated romantic waters around 50 women, one from each state. He later appeared in MooNBAse 8 (2020), before eventually being tapped to host Saturday Night Live in March of 2023.

In May of this year, it was announced that Kelce had scored a role in Grotesquerie. The news was met with widespread approval; just one month prior in April, it was reported that Kelce would be hosting a spinoff of the popular TV game show Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader. Set to premiere in Prime Video on October 16, Are You Smarter Than A Celebrity? will feature adult contestants who must rely on celebrities for help in answering questions pulled from an elementary syllabus. The winner will receive USD 100,000.

While Kelce’s career as a professional athlete is far from over, a well-timed segue into Hollywood could guarantee a lucrative way forward once he bids adieu to the NFL. Kelce certainly wouldn’t be the first athlete to make the career shift — notable Sports personalities who have made the transition to great aplomb include Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, John Cena, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Dave Bautista, Chuck Norris, and Terry Crews to name a few.

Kelce’s sparkling personality, incredible screen presence, A+ aura, and seemingly boundless supply of charm will more than guarantee a successful career in television. And while the internet appears divided on his performance in Grotesquerie, it bears nothing that he is a fledgling actor with room to grow — and like many in the web sphere, we’re eager for more.

The internet’s best reactions to Travis Kelce on Grotesquerie

Jason Kelce weighs in

Over their years in the NFL, the Kelce brothers have become crowd favourites renowned for their good-natured ribbing, sparkling family dynamics, and relatable sibling rivalry. Showcasing their easy rapport on their podcast New Heights, the Kelce brothers have garnered a reputation for being ‘in the know’ about pop culture and its many curiosities.

Given the brothers’ propensity for supporting one another, it comes as little surprise that older brother Jason has thrown his weight behind Travis’ debut acting endeavour. Showcasing the heartwarming and hilarious bond of the Kelce brothers, Jason’s reaction to Grotesquerie quickly went viral as he appeared to imply that Travis was playing the murderer. In a post on X that is currently sitting on 2.1 million views and 18.5 k likes, Jason wrote, “If Travis boiled a baby, I’m gonna be real p–ssed.”

The jury is out on whether Travis is, in fact, the murderer. However, it would certainly be an interesting plot twist if @killatrav turned out to be an actual killer.

While Grotesquerie is not the first FX show to reference Taylor Swift (See: The Bear), it certainly holds more weight by sheer merit of its direct Swift connection — Travis Kelce. In one scene, Kelce’s character Ed appears to make a cheeky reference to Swift’s song “Getaway Car” when he breaks Niecy Nash’s Lois Tryon out of the facility.

And that’s not all. Tryon’s actions directly mirror a real-world occasion in which Swift, safely tucked in the passenger seat of Kelce’s car, throws her hands in the air as she is driven away. Eagle-eyed Swifties were quick on the uptake, and social media soon exploded with posts celebrating the cheeky callback.

Pop-tarts without the frosting

Kelce’s “Getaway Car” reference was not the only Swift connection in Grotesquerie that inspired reactions across social media. When she isn’t performing for hundreds of thousands of fans at the Eras tour, Swift is known to be an excellent baker. Indeed, Swift’s baking is so prolific that beau Kelce has sung her praises to the media, saying, “I thoroughly enjoy cooking with her.” He went on to add that she “makes a great Pop-Tart and cinnamon roll.”

Kelce’s love of his girlfriend’s baking leaps off the script onto the screen in Grotesquerie. In a scene in which Tryon offers to bake Ed a cake, Kelce appears to pay homage to Swift’s culinary prowess by saying, “You know what I like? Pop-Tarts without the frosting.”

The thirst traps have landed

With only two episodes under belt thus far, Kelce has nonetheless afforded fans with plenty of material for the time-honoured tradition of making thirst traps for TikTok. Following Kelce’s debut on the FX show, numerous videos have popped up online, highlighting the star’s unmistakeable swagger and bright-eyed charm.

X is having its day

Over on X, Grotesquerie viewers have been quick to point out Kelce’s Swift connection, with memes sprouting up in abundance.
