International Breaks Killing the Buzz: Celtic Fans Left Counting the Days
Like many supporters across Europe, Celtic fans find themselves once again caught in the limbo of the international break. The October hiatus is the second one of the season, with another in November before we get a reprieve until the new year. While international football has long been a staple of the sport, the constant disruption to the club calendar seems to be turning more and more fans off.
For many, international football only becomes truly exciting during summer tournaments like the World Cup or Euros. But let’s be honest, the endless qualifiers in the middle of a season don’t capture the same magic. These stop-start interruptions can ruin the momentum of a club campaign and leave fans counting the days until their domestic side is back in action.
So, is it finally time to rethink how we manage international football and minimise its interference with club seasons? There’s certainly room for debate, and with football continuously evolving, why not consider a new plan?
There’s no denying international Football has its loyal fans, but it feels more niche outside of major tournaments. When the international fixtures come thick and fast, the energy around the domestic Game suffers.
However, we must also respect the significance of international Football, especially for smaller nations where qualification is a major achievement. Any plan to overhaul the calendar should aim to strike a balance between preserving the prestige of international comPetition while ensuring club Football maintains its momentum.
Ultimately, the growing discontent among club fans, including Celtic supporters, suggests it’s time for governing bodies to rethink the international break system. It’s a delicate balance to strike, but the right solution could make both club and international Football more enjoyable for everyone involved.
