Rodgers Drops Champions League Final Joke After Big Win
After Celtic’s 5-1 thrashing of Slovan Bratislava, Brendan Rodgers couldn’t resist injecting a bit of humour into his post-match comments. Reflecting on his side’s dominant Champions League opener, the Celtic boss joked about the current standings in the comPetition.
“Yeah, the comPetition stops now—we play Bayern Munich in the final!” Rodgers laughed, referring to the fact that, as things stood, Celtic and Bayern were both sitting at the top of the new Champions League league table.
The remark came after an impressive display by Celtic, who put on a five-star performance in front of an electric Celtic Park crowd. While it was clearly a joke, Rodgers’ quip highlights the optimism around his team following such a strong start to their European campaign. Bayern Munich are perennial favourites in the tournament, but after a performance like this, Rodgers and the Celtic faithful can enjoy the fantasy, even if only for a moment.
With tougher Games on the horizon in the revamped group stage format, the win against Slovan Bratislava sets Celtic up nicely. It was a great night at Parkhead, both on and off the pitch, with the Celtic manager finding the right balance between celebrating the victory and keeping things light-hearted.
