Chris Sutton Issues Warning to Brendan Rodgers After Dortmund Hammering
Chris Sutton has come to Brendan Rodgers’ defence following Celtic’s crushing 7-1 defeat to Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday night but also issued a stark warning to the Hoops boss.
The former Celtic striker acknowledged that Rodgers has faced heavy criticism for the team’s approach to the Game, but insists that the manager shouldn’t be lambasted for his initial approach—so long as lessons are learned.
Celtic set up with a positive intent in Dortmund, looking to take the Game to their Bundesliga opponents. However, this left the Scottish champions exposed, and Dortmund ruthlessly exploited the space time and again. Despite the onslaught in the first half, little changed after the break, with Celtic sticking to their attacking approach, much to their detriment.
Writing in The Daily Record, Sutton said: “Brendan Rodgers does not deserve a caning for taking a positive approach into Dortmund. But he will if the offence is repeated.”
Continuing in his collum, he wrote: “Put simply, he doesn’t deserve to be hammered for finding that out. The criticism should come if the same mistakes are repeated. If the manager and his team fail to act upon clear evidence and put measures in place to try to counter it, any future stick will, in turn, be totally merited.”
I think some of the frustration comes from the fact that Brendan Rodgers has been involved in some of Celtic’s heaviest defeats in Europe, in his previous spell and now this spell.
He’s played enough Games with Celtic in the Champions League to know that the approach has to change for these tough matches, especially away from home.
It’s Atalanta away next for the Bhoys, with fans hoping for a good result and hopefully a change of approach.
