“New mask, same task,” Robert Downey Jr writes in an Instagram post.

The surprise announcement was made at San Diego Comic Con when a masked Downey Jr was seen standing amidst an army of Doom Henchman before pulling off his mask to reveal his identity. Fans are so far expressing mixed feeling about the casting decision. Some are disappointed that their favourite Marvel superhero has turned into a supervillain while others are beyond thrilled to have Downey Jr back in the MCU. As they say, “You either die a hero or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain.”

Earlier this year, Robert Downey Jr won his first Oscar for his role in Oppenheimer in which he played another complicated villain in Admiral Lewis Strauss.

Avengers: Doomsday is currently scheduled to release on May 2026 and will be followed shortly by another Avengers film titled Secret Wars. In the meantime, Marvel fans can look forward to the release of Captain America: Brave New World and The Fantastic 4: First Steps starring Pedro Pascal.
