Reports from Belgium suggest that Celtic are keen on bringing Royal Antwerp’s talented winger, Michael-Ange Balikwisha, to Glasgow. Sources indicate that the two clubs are set to meet for talks this week, highlighting Celtic’s serious interest in the Belgian star. [Sacha Tavolieri]

Balikwisha, a 23-year-old winger, has been a standout performer for Royal Antwerp since his transfer from Standard Liège in July 2021. Primarily a left winger, he is known for his versatility, being able to play across the front line, including on the right wing and as a second striker. This adaptability could be a significant asset for Celtic as they seek to strengthen their attacking options.

Since joining Antwerp, Balikwisha has made over 98 league appearances, scoring 18 goals and providing numerous assists. His technical skills, agility, and dribbling ability have made him a key player for Antwerp. He played his part in helping them secure the Belgian Pro League title in the 2022-2023 season, their first in 66 years. Additionally, he played a crucial role in Antwerp’s Belgian Cup and Super Cup victories, further proving his ability to perform in high-stakes matches.

Celtic currently have Daizen Maeda and Luis Palma occupying the left-wing position. Maeda has been a consistent performer, known for his relentless work rate and speed. Conversely, Luis Palma had an inconsistent season last term, leaving fans and management uncertain about his long-term impact at the club. The potential arrival of Balikwisha could inject fresh energy into Celtic’s attack, providing Healthy comPetition and possibly pushing Palma to deliver more consistently.

Balikwisha’s ability to play anywhere across the front line would offer Celtic’s manager, Brendan Rodgers, greater tactical flexibility. His knack for taking on defenders, coupled with a keen eye for goal and the ability to deliver key passes, makes him an exciting prospect for the Hoops. His experience in European comPetitions with Antwerp, including the UEFA Champions League, could also bring additional experience and composure to Celtic’s squad in this season’s campaign.

The player’s valuation is unknown, but he was purchased back in 2021 for around €5m according to Transfermarkt. You would expect the Belgian club will hold out for a sizeable fee.

Celtic have yet to officially make a signing yet this summer, hopefully in the next 48 hours we begin to see movement.
